PSP 7 folders appearing on desktop

. . .seems to do lots more things but all the icons are too small and it's unintuitive.I should have done a crib list before I returned to PSP 7.

Corel sometime does a lousy job of telling what's available. Since PSP 2018, PSP has included Essentials vs Complete workspaces. Anyone with any experience with PSP tells you to use the Complete workspace. Pick (under the Edit tab) the User Interface item on the main menu, and you will find selections for Icon Size, Scroll Bar Size, and Node Size. In PSP 2019 they added a selection about Text Size. These should give you items that are not "too small." As for "unintuitive," I personally find Adobe products to be "unintuitive." Each to his/her own. At least, PSP does not go away when you stop paying a subscription.

PSP still works, while its maker, Jasc Software, is dead and gone. I still have PSP7; I used it for years. I have seen downloads of PSP7 free on the Web. Later versions offer a lot, too. Whichever way you go with PSP, you can't go wrong.

For a long time - years - I used PSP7 to finish off icons I had started in Inkscape. But I must say that the PSPx-series have been very good apps, too. I ended up keeping PSP7 for printing out map sections. But when PSPx9 came out (it would be PSP 2017 if they had been naming that way) I dropped even that. You may return, if not to PSP 2020 then to PSP 2021.

Help for PSP doesn't work any more for Windows 10. Is there an online version of the help files anywhere?

Although there's a version of Winhlp32.exe for Windows 10 which may sort that issue. (or cause more, Windows is like a Rubik cube).

Greetings all!
Was surprised to find this board, and relatively active considering the age of PSP7! Nice to see I'm not the only one who still likes this older stuff.

At any rate, I came here looking for a solution to the folders on desktop issue myself.
First off, uninstalling and reinstalling with a new copy didn't do diddly. I was able to find my original installation CD (which was supposed to be in my case with all my originals, but it wasn't.. imagine that), did the reinstall, and folders kept popping up on the desktop.

I went through all the recommended Registry editing steps here (in addition to the ones I had already tried on my own since that is the backup when an uninstall and reinstall does not work) to no avail. However..... I did figure out FINALLY how to fix this issue: Delete the whole damned Jasc registry entry at "Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Jasc"

This actually forces PSP7 to think it has never been installed on this particular machine, and will reset all it's internal bull hockey. After having deleted that key, and running it again, no more folders. (I did NOT have to do another uninstall and reinstall... just delete the registry key)

Ok, well, that's it for me. Just wanted to pass along the fix in case any one else out there runs into this issue and needs a solution. PSP7 is still by far my favorite go to for editing and quick graphics generation.

*Edit: I should mention that this will, of course, reset any program preferences you have already set. Small price to pay for solving this issue IMHO.

I think I may have solved this problem of PSP7 folders appearing in unwanted places, in a way that does not cause the loss of all settings.

Click on:
File / Preferences / File Locations

At the bottom of that dialog is "Paint Shop Pro default system directory for this file type." The directory listed here is where the "Tubes" "Patterns," "Textures," etc. folders will always appear and reappear. The goal is to change this default system directory.

Begin by creating a folder in a Windows-friendly location, such as ..\Documents. You might call it something like "\Paint Shop Pro 7 Support Files\"

Copy all the unwanted folders - "Tubes" "Patterns," "Textures," etc. - from the old unwanted location into your new folder.

The next step involves use of the Registry Editor, so DO NOT PROCEED UNTIL YOU HAVE CREATED A RESTORE POINT! (Yes, I am shouting!) Please do a web search for "Create a restore point Windows [yourversion]. You might name the restore point something like "Before PSP7 RegEdit."

After you have created a restore point, start the Registry Editor:
Start / Search / "Regedit" / Regedit.exe

Navigate to this key:
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Jasc\Paint Shop Pro 7\General\UserDirectory

There, you should find your current default system directory. Double-click on "UserDirectory." Under Value Data, paste the full path to your desired default system directory -- starting with the drive letter and ending in a final backslash: \.

Click "File" / "Exit"

Now, start PSP7.

Click on:
File / Preferences / File Locations

Note your new default system directory listed at the bottom.

Make sure that all references to the old, unwanted file locations are changed to your new default system directory, in each tab of the dialog.

Go into the old, unwanted, location and delete the unwanted folders.

Close and reopen PSP7 a few times. Make sure that the folders do not reappear in the old, unwanted location.

Rejoice.

Confirming this works perfectly, clearing up a problem that has been paining me for a few years now!
