PSP 7 folders appearing on desktop
My PSP 7 stopped working recently. I googled for a solution, and forget exactly what it was, followed the instructions, and it started working again.
But now folders keep popping up on my desktop. I googled for the solution, it was go to File, Preferences, File locations. It was showing desktop, so I browsed to Program files, Jasc, and each folder individually, selected, ok.
Still dropping folders on my desktop each time I open the program.
Went back in, and even tho I selected the proper folders, it says below the path options,
"default system directory for this file type:
C:\Users\Kathleen\Desktop\Tubes
How can I fix this?

Re: PSP 7 folders appearing on desktop
Choosing any directory in Program Files is usually a problem for most programs because Windows restricts access to Program Files. You'll likely have better results if you choose something in My Documents.

Re: PSP 7 folders appearing on desktop
I'm following this with some interest. I've been using PSP7 for nearly 20 years and this has never happened to me.Kathleen wrote:OK, I created a PSP folder in My Documents, changed folder location for Tubes to the new folder. Had PS3, PSP3; Installed: PSP-4.12, 5.03, 6.02, 7.04 (liked it a lot & used it for years), 8.00, XI, x4.3.0.3, x6.2.0.20, x7.4.0.11, x8.3.0.13, x9.2.0.7; now using PSPx10 (PSP 2018; version 20.2.0.1 x64) on Win 10-64 b2004.

Re: PSP 7 folders appearing on desktop
I need you to open your registry editor (regedit.exe)
Go to Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Jasc\Paint Shop Pro\
Select the folder for your version, and you should see a field called "DefaultWrite." The directory listed in "DefaultWrite" is where PSP creates the folders. Does it point to your desktop?
I don't have PSP7 on this machine so I'm assuming the structure is a lot like Corel's. With Corel the key is located here Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Corel\PaintShop Pro\X9

Re: PSP 7 folders appearing on desktop
Interesting, it appears PSP 7 was doing it own thing. But DefaultWrite in those PSP 7 is different from later versions, it's numerical. And appears zero index based.
EDIT: Alright I take back some of what I said.
I was able to get it to create the tubes folder. I forgot that since I wasn't running it as administrator Windows 10 uses a "VirtualStore" folder in my AppData folder to hold any changes to the Program Files file system.
I still haven't found a way to permanently change the location of the default system folder. It's still forceably changing to the Program files folder even when I edit the registry.

"I need you to open your registry editor (regedit.exe)"
I don't really know how to do this. I'm thinking of uninstalling & reinstalling.
Now I just need to find the CD.

Re: PSP 7 folders appearing on desktop
Feeling rested this morning, so I went in to change it.
Found
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Jasc\Paint Shop Pro 7\Cache\Tubes\DirName1
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Jasc\Paint Shop Pro 7\Cache\Tubes\DirName2
Opened them all, changed desktop to Cache\Tubes, etc.
Opened PSP again, folders reappeared on desktop AGAIN. Went back into registry, the DirName1 is the correct folder. But there is a new line created showing desktop. "C:\Users\Kathleen\Desktop\Brushes"
This has happened before to other people. It happened after a Windows update, see cnet link below.

Re: PSP 7 folders appearing on desktop
I think the lack of responses is mostly because no one has a good idea how to correct the problem.
Could you post a screen shot of your file locations dialog box? I could try setting mine like yours to see if I can duplicate the problem.

Re: PSP 7 folders appearing on desktop
Have you tried unticking the "Enable this path" box under line 2?

Re: PSP 7 folders appearing on desktop
I do see a couple problems there. Try these things:
1 Change that first line to C:\Program Files (x86)\Jasc Software Inc\Paint Shop Pro 7\Tubes
2 Change the second line to something you want to use. Something in My Documents or Documents. Use the Browse button.
3 Check the Save to path box under the second line.
