VideoStudio Ultimate 2018 Crashes on 'New Project'

Post by murds »

Recently updated to VideoStudio Ultimate 2018 from a (much) earlier version. After a successful install I find that the app crashes when I select 'New Project'. Sleuthing around I think it is related to the sample mp4 files they supply (SP-V01.mp4 -> SP-V03.mp4) because I can crash the app by trying to open them in VS (double clicking). As a side point - these same files open fine in windows media player.

Following the 'if it hurts don't do it' philosophy I have done some light editing work and just doing a 'save as' when done. But I am concerned that something isn't right and I will hit my head eventually. Thinking it might be a codec problem, and I know that I didn't have quick time loaded on the PC - I followed the youtube instructions posted on one of the VS forums and loaded the quicktime libraries on my pc. No change in behavior. The other day, even though I loaded the quicktime libraries - I got a QTbridge error like maybe all is not right. Although I do not know if the crash issue is even related to the QT bridge error.

I don't see references to this particular crashing issue anywhere. Are there logs or debug info written anywhere to figure out the issue? Any thoughts from the power users on how best to debug?

Attached is the screen I get when either selecting "New Project' from the file menu or my double clicking the SP-V files.

Welcome to the forum!

In my 14 years on this forum, I suspect this may be the first time I have seen anyone report a crash on choosing New Project... And I can't think of what might be causing it. I doubt it is the videos which come with the program. Corel have used these same samples over many versions. If there was any general problem with them, there would have been lots of complaints by now, and there haven't been.

Before suggesting the usual uninstall/reinstall routine, I would suggest you first try a reset. To do this, you have to go to C:\Users\[Your Name]\AppData\Roaming\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio Pro (x64) and rename the 22.0 folder you will find there to some other name (e.g. 22.0_OLD). Then restart VS. It will take several minutes to open, so be patient. All the databases used by VS are being rebuilt and this takes time. But when VS reopens, see if New Project still causes a crash.

If it does, then all I can suggest is that you do a complete uninstall and reinstall.

Thanks for the warm welcome Ken. I had previously tried uninstalling and reinstalling to no avail. But I tried what you suggested - except my folder version number was 21 and not 22 (curious as I just upgraded to the 'latest'.) That didn't work, so I completely removed all traces of VS and Quicktime (as I was getting QTbridge errors). I reinstalled only VS and am getting the same crash (attached a png with the crash details open). I can certainly work around the issue but I fear it is symptomatic of a bigger issue. Is there not a way to enable logging or something to trace the crash? I am not a world class videophile but am a software engineer and know my way around a PC.

Hi
I did a google for the file Igdumdim64.dll
It appears to be associate with Intel HD Graphics Drivers with recommendations of re-installing / updating.
Maybe you need to explore that option?

Thanks Trevor - I also searched and saw references to the graphics driver. So I did download the latest graphics driver from Intel for my PC/Processor and it resolved the problem. "New Project' failed because it loads SP-V01.mp4 in to the preview pane, and the three mp4 samples all cause the exception.

So some search fodder for next person with hits issue: Video Studio crash. Fault in module igdumdim64, exception code 0xc0000005. Typically an issue in the graphics driver, update to the latest.

Thanks Ken, Trevor.

Hate to drag up an old thread but I just installed VS 2018 Ultimate on a new Dell Alienware laptop with Windows 11 and everytime there is an mp4 video clip as the first clip in the Media Library and the program tries to play the clip and it crashes on launch. The same clips play in other programs on the laptop and I can drag the clip onto the timeline of VS and it plays, just not as a clip in the Media Library. When the program first launched after installing (and I have uninstalled and reinstalled it many times!) it would crash because of the 3 mp4 samples like mentioned in murds Thu Jan 03, 2019 9:53 pm post above. I deleted the 3 files in the data base and then the program launches. My video drivers & codecs are up to date (as I mentioned the videos play in other programs on the laptop). I even installed Quicktime 7.7.9 to no avail. I have messed with preferences & project properties setting them the same as on my desktop running the program under Windows 10 pro to no avail. Other file formats seem to work OK in the Media Library, except .mp4's and .mov files. I even tried batch converting the mp4 to other formats, AVI, Mpeg, etc. and it will crash VS. As long as there is an mp4 as the first file in Media Library and nothing in the timeline the program crashes on launch. If the mp4 is not the first item in the Media Library the program will launch. If anyone has any ideas???

Thanks,

John

Hi John
There was a hot fix provided by Corel to correct fails to launch download from here.....

https://forum.corel.com/viewtopic.php?p=367652#p367652

However I would have thought this would have been included within the program or service patches.
can you go to Help - Check for Updates, I do not have 2018 installed so cannot check the latest version.

Thanks Trevor. I’ve checked & there are no downloads through Help. Says I’m using the latest version. I’ll look at the hot fix tomorrow. Something I thought of after I posted, the MP4’s that cause the crashes were all either created by VS 2018 or earlier versions or were supplied by Corel with the program. I found some old MP4’s that would work with the program. Will have to search my brain to find how they originated. Only difference I saw was the ones that didn’t crash the program had frame rates of 30. The ones that crashed seemed to be 29.xxx. Will have to do more thinking on that and will try to convert some of the troublemakers to 30 fps.

If those other videos which show a frame rate of 29.xxx are in fact 29.97, then they should be OK since that (and 59.94) is the standard frame rate for NTSC video. The 30 is just a rounding up of 29.97 to make it easier to say.

These are some of the things I tried to solve the problem of mp4's and .mov files causing VS2018 to shut down.
Checked program updates, none available.
Ran DISM and SFC file checker program.
Downloaded K-Lite Codec pack.
Installed Quick time essentials.
Updated NVIDIA Graphic from NVIDIA site as Windows said it was the latest driver but found newer one at NVIDIA.
Uninstalled and re-installed VS 2018 & ran cleanup tool (several times).
Reinstalled VS 2018 from Corel site.
Note: Everytime VS 2018 installed on my Windows 11, got msg. that Roxio Setup.exe can't run due to security issues.

Nothing above worked and I know I have spent the better part of a week troubleshooting this and probably have forgotten some of the things I tried. I was about to buy VS 2022 but read of some of the same issues with that version.

Finially after reading https://forum.corel.com/viewtopic.php?p ... ov#p395988, and Ken Berry's post about unticking the box beside "Enable hardware decoder acceleration" fixed it, for his pink playback clips, I tried that. BANG!!! That is what enabled the playing of mp4 and mov files in VS 2018 on my Windows 11 laptop (the files played outside of VS2018, just not in VS 2018). For others reading this post, in VS2018, go to Settings/Preferences/Performance Tab and the check boxes are at the bottom.
I left the boxes checked under File Creation and Performance Optimization. I just unchecked the box in Editing Process for Enable Hardware Decoder Acceleration.

Not sure why this worked and why I can have the Enable Hardware Decoder Acceleration checked on my Windows 10 computer but not on my Windows 11 laptop. This was a new laptop that I had only installed MS Office 2021 and CorelDraw Grapics Suite X7 before installing VS 2018 Ultimate.

So..., for now things are working. We will see what happens after I am into a couple of days working on an hour long video with many assorted file types. Fingers crossed! I still have more programs to install on the laptop to make it my traveling companion so we will see what else gets screwed up.
Thanks Ken & Trevor for your input.

John

Looking back to VS 2018, when you go to Preferences > Performance, as you did, below "Hardware Acceleration" is "Type". You would only have had the choice between NVIDIA CUDA and Intel Quick Sync Video. Given that both your PC and the new laptop have NVIDIA graphics, I imagine you would have set that to CUDA. The problem is that for quite a long time CUDA has never been updated in VS to match the CUDA performance which is out there. So if you chose it in both computers, the fact that it works on your somewhat older PC may be down to the fact that the CUDA version which came with VS 2018 is itself older and more likely to work with the older CUDA of that computer. On the new laptop, CUDA might be too recent to be compatible with the VS CUDA.

People having trouble with Hardware Acceleration have often found that if they set Type here to Intel Quick Sync Video, their problem goes away. This is when apart from having a distinct NVidia card, their motherboard also comes with a built-in Intel graphics chip that will usually work with Hardware Acceleration. It is fairly common to have these two graphics options on the one computer. The problem then might be, however, that the Intel chip will not have the same performance specifications as the NVidia card. So the choice comes down to whether Intel acceleration is going to be faster for you overall than the performance of the NVidia card without acceleration.

FWIW in VS 2022 Type also now shows AMD, and for me this works on my nearly one year old PC. In my case, I am lucky since my motherboard does NOT have an on-board Intel graphics chip.

Hi Ken,

I'm not finding, "below "Hardware Acceleration" is "Type"". See my screenshot from my desktop PC (it looks the same on the laptop). There are no other choices besides the checkboxes shown.

Thanks for your reply. That makes sense as to what is going on between the desktop PC and the laptop graphics cards. I know when updating the graphics driver on the laptop there were two listed in Devices, Intel & NVIDIA.

More to add. Did some testing for share as mp4 and found out if hardware decoder acceleration and encoder acceleration were both checked, my fade-to-black transition between elements on the timeline were scrambled. If only enable hardware decoder acceleration was checked, then the rendering speed was still pretty good and the transitions fading to black looked normal.

Kens reference to "Type" is not present in VS2018, it was added to later versions to give you the choice of selecting Nvidia Cuda, AMD or Intel Quick sync
