Importing Libraries from VSPX7 to VSP 2018

Post by mal1938 »

Hi Greetings.

Importing Libraries from VSPX7 to VSP 2018 is very slow. Should say extremely slow.

After about 39 minutes I had to Discontinue the import. This was my second attempt at importing after installing video studio Pro 2018.

Process is working. For example after after discontinuing found some parts of the library were imported. 5 out of 23. That is not achievement.

Importing libraries created with VSPx7 back in to VSP X7 was always swift. No waiting to start working again.

Any comment please.

Thanks

I have written to Corel Support. When reply comes I will post it together with results.
Does VSP 2018 have any problems? Lack of response suggests that not many users. Please comment

Please advise if Official Corel Support the same as Corel User to user Web Board

Corel Official Support asked me to use Corel User to User Web Board.

Please see below for the advice I received

mal1938

I would suggest you to uninstall VideoStudio 2018 from control panel of your system. Please make sure you have back up the files before uninstalling.

Then download and run the clean up tool for VideoStudio 2018 using below link,

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=59847

After running the cleanup tool for VideoStudio 2018, kindly make use of the below link to install the VideoStudio 2018.

Sorry about the lack of response here. Unfortunately I personally cannot offer any advice on the transfer of libraries, simply because I have never done such a transfer -- not once, never! I have never seen the need for it.

However, as to your other question, no, Corel official support is definitely not the user to user web board. You are, of course, posting your questions on the user to user board. But as its name implies, it consists of users (like me and the other site admin people plus of course the Moderators) who volunteer their time to try to help other users. We are not Corel employees, and are not paid for the advice we provide -- unlike the official Corel Support people. That being said, official Support can be a bit patchy, managing to help some users but sending others on endless loops of "Uninstall -- Reinstall"...

I don't see the suggestion you mentioned from Support, recommending you pursue your questions here. Was it elsewhere in that message, or came to you verbally?

Hopefully Trevor (a.k.a "lata") who is our library transfer guru, will jump in here. He was travelling when you first posted your question and was thus likely unaware of it.

Hi Ken,
Thanks. Really appreciate the contact on this site.

The following advice came from Corel in an email. I chose not to give name of the Corel contract staff who sent the email.

I will post here some additional experience that may be of some value for discussion

Regards

mal1938.

I am trying to remember, but I am sure that in the past it has been mentioned that Corel changed something after X7 which prevents libraries from being copied from X7 to any later version

I use a workaround which does take a bit of time if you have a lot of libraries, but do you really need a lot of libraries. Remember the images you see there are are not your actual clips just links to them, so if you make a habit of creating separate Windows folders for each library contents it takes seconds to create a new library and import the contents of a folder to it.

so my workaround is to open X7 and drag all the clips from one library pane down into it's respective timeline (video/photo , audio, title etc) then save as a project say call it "transfer 1" close X7 and open 2018 and open the new project and slide all the contents from the timeline up into your new library pane. Repeat that as required for all other libraries, even works for most of the supplied items not just your own clips

Yes i was on holiday when you first posted

Hi Mal
Cleanup tool
I assume support recommended that to not only reset the program but clean the library, unfortunately the cleanup tool would not do that, it does not remove personal settings.

First I do not use the library as a means of viewing all my media I just do not see the point

My library contains my current projects, all other older finished projects are removed from the library.
To manage my files I use Windows Explorer, each project gets a new unique folder that contains all clips I use in my project, and if need those I simply import them.

The question is how many library pages are you using?

I am quite surprised that the X7 libraries will import to 2018, and they do even being some 5 years old.
When we import a lot of clips to our library it does take quite a while to load and that’s just for one page, so you can imagine the time it takes to import a lot of pages at the same time
Mind you 39 minutes does seem excessive.
Ok
I would check the X7 library for any unlinked clips, I think those would slow the import process.
And if you have used nesting, inserting VSP’s to the library could also slow the process, very difficult to prove of course.

So how many library pages are we talking about?
If you have a lot you may just need to be more patient, 39 minutes does seem to indicate

There is / may be another option in copying the systems files from X7 to 2018, I will check that out and get back if I am successful, not sure if that will reduce your times?

Oh and yes i am able to import the libraries from X7 to 2018 without problems.

Hi
The library contents are saved to files here
C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio Pro (x64)\17.0\en-US
The file called VS_AllMediaView.dat seems to be the one to copy
Paste to
C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio Pro (x64)\21.0
To replace that file, make a copy of 2018’s VS_AllMediaView.dat file as a backup.
When you run Video Studio it may take a while to open?
If it takes the same length of time to open then I would suspect something wrong with the X7 library
And if things mess up delete the 21.0 folder to reset the program.

BJC’s recommendation to transfer clips using Project files is as good as any and probably safer than messing with the programs files.

Is there some workaround, how to import vsp projects from VS X7 into VS 2018? I have several projects with over hundred cuts each and Corel pushes me to update to 2018 ( due to some new features missing from VS X7) but they have no idea how to import the old projects into the VS 2018.
Basically I would be happy when the clip file and the timing would be imported into the 2018 timeline and I can reedit the rest ( crossings, effects, titles etc) and use some new feature from the VS 2018.

Is it possible to run parallel both VS X7 and the VS 2018(2019) parallel on the same computer?

yes you can install another version of Video Studio although you can only run one at a time
Your VSP project files should open ok using 2018 provided it is the purchased version and not the trial.

You are best to keep X7 installed as any clips / filters used would i believe need X7.

You may be best to create a Smart Package which will save all clips used in your project to one folder
then open that using 2018

You should try installing the trial version, even though that will not open your projects it will give you an insight to the newer program

Hi Trevor

Thank you very much. According Corel the import of old VSP files does not work on 2018. That is why I am asking. I tried the X8 version when I faced first time to this problem.
Did you tried to import the old VSP files? How can I test it when the trial version does not support this feature and corel tells me that it does not work.
That is the reason I need to know if the parallel VS x7 and 2018 works on the same PC ( not simultanously).

Hi
There is a difference to opening old projects made with X7 as apposed to opening projects and continuing editing. Some effects like stabilisation may need re-doing.

If you can open the project using X7 and be able to edit without problems there is no reason why that project will not open using 2018

I have just found a project created by X7 in 2014, it opened using X7 requested a relink, to be expected, re-link worked ok.
I then saved the project - closed X7 – opened 2018 – opened the X7 project with no problems.
With little or no editing was expected to open ok

I then opened another project with some simple edits applied again no issues, except a re-link

Thank you Trevor

I will go into a risk and purchase the update ( I need one important feature what is not available in X7).

I am on-line with the corel support team they are telling me that the newer versions are not compatible with x7.
I do not mind if some effects etc are missing, important is the the clips are imported to the time line. Everything else I will redo from scratch, but I do not want to repeat over 100 cuts and timings again.

Hi Trevor

i need a lens correction.vft.
I have external programs to correct the fisheye lenses, but in the recent film I have many clips from such cameras and the extenal conversion is very time consuming.
Corel does not offer this vft for VS X7
