mp4 will not load in VS2018

I can play the file in multiple players. I can edit the file in Microsoft's video editor. I can convert the file in VideoConverterFactory.
I can't load it into VS Ultimate 2018 ("File Format Mismatch")
The video was generated using PhotoFilmStrip.

Any ideas ?

I have no problem loading the file you linked into VS 2018 Ultimate. Is that file the one you are having problems with?

Something peculiar to my setup I guess. I am confused. I just downloaded the file so I am sure it is the correct one. Tried "Insert To Timeline - Video" and got the same format error.

Just checking - Are you on Windows 10 64 bit?

I also get that File Format Mismatch error in my VS 2018. And yes, I'm running Win 10 64 bit.

FWIW VLC says it is mpeg-4 1920 x 1080, 30 FPS and AAC audio -- so it sounds as though it is absolutely normal HD video.

I am running W7 and W8.1 and the file works on both systems. I never "downgraded" to W10

Interestingly enough I just tried opening it in Cyberlink Power Director 16. First it took its time trying to opening what is after all only a 27 MB file. Then it came up with an error msg saying it couldn't open it because "the file is broken, an unsupported format, protected video content, or for some other reason".

Vegas Movie Studio 15 Platinum also couldn't open, though its error msg said the reason could not be determined.

I just tried Windows Media Player. It will not play the PhotoFilmStrip output files either.

I tried another converter (XMediaRecode) in addition to Wondershare and it also successfully reads and converts the files.

I am out of ideas.

Converted the video, using Format Factory, still using MP4, converted video now plays OK, did notice that the original appears to be a flash video in a flv format

Reading this, I wondered whether it was windows 10 as the primary culprit - after all, the latest build of win 10 force-fed to all users has been causing heart attacks all over, many emergency fixes issued.
So, since I use 64 bit software on a 64bit motherboard but on win 7, I downloaded the file and tried it in all the versions of VS I have on my main PC. The media player in win 7 won't play it, but VLC 3.0.4 plays it fine. Both X8, X9, X10 and 2018 all gave a file mismatch error on importing to the timeline. And a look at the properties of it in windows (left click the file, properties, details tab) shows nothing for video or audio at all.

Something fishy in denmark here

PS22 don't like it. ApowerEdit does as well as Bolide Movie Creator
My quick diagnose is that the audio is the culprit.
By extraction (by copy) just the video, my X9.2 will take it in.

By renaming it to flv , PS22 likes it

but not VS
