hello. made my first video and saved it as mpeg4. a 2:32 video made a file size of 307 MB! seems way to big to email to clients, and seems big in general. primary use of the file will be facebook and youtube. is this a real problem? ways to make a smaller file necessary? thanks so much

Perhaps you would like to tell us a bit more about the video you made - what settings you used etc - videos are generally quite big - in fact for a final video may well run in to multiple Gigabytes - the size of video files is one of the reason that so many video sharing sites exist - it is unlikely that you will make any reasonable length video that you can e-mail - if you don't want others to see them then at least upload to a cloud and give specific people access to download them
Having said that 307 Mb does sound a bit big for 2.32 minutes I would have expected around 70 Mb which is why we need to know what settings you used particularly things like frame size and bit rate

Re: huge file sizes w/VS 2018?
Hi
And welcome to the forums
Video does need a lot of data to produce good quality.
The Data Rate in Kbps is mainly responsible for quality and file size although the frame size and rate also has an influence.
For Mpeg4 a data rate of say 10000kbps would be suitable for YouTube, reducing the data rate further will impact on quality, although you could try 5000kbps for face book and YT
MPEG-4 AVC (1280 x 720, 25p, 5Mbps) uses approx. 35Mb per minute
For a 1 minute video 10000kbps would produce a file over 60 Mb
If your client wants quality then you should be using at least 15000Kbps as the lowest option
Saying that you should be trying to retain the original video quality and that really means using the original Data Rate, Frame Size Frame Rate and Frame Type.
Higher Quality HD may use progressive frame type, that certainly is gonna dramatically increase the sizes. A Quick test showed that to be 140 Mb per minute as a lower estimate.
You should forget about e-mail and use a Sharing Site, uploading your video for your clients to download.

Re: huge file sizes w/VS 2018?
hey thanks for the replies. I just used the default setting (first time at this)
24 bits 1920x1080, 30fps
H.264 high profile video: 15000 kbps
48000hz 16 bit stereo
mpeg aac audio: 192 kbps
they have lots of other options available(different resolution dimension and fps rates)
but I cannot show u them here, no way to screen capture that drop down box
I notice on youtube the resolution sizes 720p, 480p etc not sure how that matches videostudio options cuz if one
changes the 720p part other things also change
for test viewing I can post the vid on my website on a hidden page and send the url to ppl who might need to see it.

Re: huge file sizes w/VS 2018?
For testing create a new template using 5000kbps
From Share select the MPEG-4 AVC (1920 x 1080, 25p, 15Mbps) profile
Then select the “+” to add a profile
From the New Profile Options rename the template I would use MY1920 x 1080, 30p, 5Mbps
From the Compression Tab change the data rate to 5000kbps
General Tab to set the frame rate
The new profile will be available from the context list
MPEG-4 Files
24 bits, 1920 x 1080, 30 fps
Frame-based
H.264 High Profile Video: 5000 Kbps
48000 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
MPEG AAC Audio: 192 Kbps
You can always use Settings – Movie Profile Manager, the new profiles being available via Share.
For your final output to retain quality you should try to use the settings of your original videos, where possible.

Re: huge file sizes w/VS 2018?
5,000kbps is awful for 1080p 30FPS video.
And it will look unsightly once you upload it anywhere and they do their thing to it.
