You Tube clip to VS8

Post by Shepdog1 »

Using "4 K Video Downloader," I brought a You Tube clip to my desktop. It's MP4. Plays just fine. But when I tried to bring it to my VS (Import Media File to Library > Insert Video > click on the file...I get File Format Mismatch. It won't go. I searched File Format Mismatch but the posts were very old, early versions of VS.
The 4K downloader can also do FLV, MKV, and 3GP, if that matters.
How can I get a YT clip to my Library?
Thanks!!
Bill

Be aware that files uploaded to/downloaded from YT are re-processed by YT and optimised for download speed, for viewing by whoever later downloads it. So the YT report of mp4 format for your download copy is probably not really true. VS has a history of issues with off-spec formats, but I've not heard of any YT file not being accepted by VS.

Whoops, just re-read the post heading - you say VS8 there, but I assume you mean X8, and your bio says you are using 2018. And you say it's 4k file. Only the very recent versions of VS manage 4K, so what version of VS are you trying to import this file to?

"...what version of VS are you trying to import this file to?" I'm using X8. Has anyone on here been able to import a YT clip to their X8? If so, how? Am I using the wrong downloader? How to I solve the "Mismatch" problem?

I now longer use X8 but I have downloaded youTube clips into X8 without problems ... but that was years ago.

Why don't you post the link to the file you downloaded and users can test it? Just posting that it is a mp4 clip means nothing as there are many sub-versions of mp4.

Canuck,
I just kept clicking and somehow got the file to the Library. It would not go when listed as Shortcut, but when I went directly to Downloads for it, it came through.
Whew.

I don't understand your response. Can you post the link to the youTube video you downloaded?

According to the user guide for X8, that software should be able to manage 4K clips, altho it's discussed as combining HD clips via overlays into a UHD result. And 4K hardware acceleration and rendering are discussed. However, for any reasonable edit performance with these files you would need to have smart proxy enabled in the settings/preferences/performance tab.

All of that is about creating a 4K (discussed generically as any file with a 3820x1080 resolution, or higher) result. There seems to be no discussion in the guide that I could find about directly importing a 4K file in the first instance. Maybe someone else with a 4K file and X8 installed could verify that X8 can actually import a 4k file.

Some HD video clips in MP4 format have something in the header what VS does not like. For example the Google Earth's Movie Maker also creates an MP4 stream what the VS cannot process (X7). The same clip works fine with other programs ( like a Prodrenalin) and it is enough to record it again (in unchanged format) and it immediatelly starts to work in VS as well.
