Crop Tool Questions

Post by Steel Rat »

Hello,

I'm new to the forum, and new to Paintshop Pro. I'm using 2019 Ultimate and getting my "feet" wet.

First question: How do I get the crop tool to snap to the edge of an image instead of sliding right past it? Obviously I'm used to Photoshop, but I also use Affinity Photo, and they have a setting for this. I went through the preferences, didn't see anything. Also tried snap to guides, that didn't do it. Turned on grid and tried snap to grid, that didn't have the desired effect either.

Can anyone tell me how to do this?

Thanks!!

When using crop, if you slide the crop area beyond the edge of the image and then let go, it snaps to the edge that you have crossed over. An alternative is to select "original proportions" in the size box and the crop area includes the full image. You can then adjust the size to what you want.

If your crop boundary extends beyond the edge of an image, it shouldn't change the edge at all.
Did something happen when you tried this?

(and I can't resist asking, are you a fan of "Slippery Jim diGriz"? you're bringing back memories...)

Ah. Thanks! I hadn't tried that. I'm used to photoshop where the edge of the crop snaps to the edge of the image as you're cropping.

Hi Jack,

Based on MarkZ's reply, it turns out I can't extend beyond the edge of an image, so problem solved, it seems.

Indeed! I read them a couple decades ago. The first couple were the best, they got a little too wonky for me after that. But I've used this screen name since way back in the late 80s when I ran a BBS.

Ehume, you sent me a PM, but I can't reply, I haven't participated enough for that privilege.

To answer your question about Affinity, when you have the crop tool chosen, along the top toolbar, a little right of center, there are three icons, one is a magnet. That's the one that snaps to the edges of the image.

Hope that helps!
