major Bug in Videostudio 2018 ultimate

Post by splash3313 »

Bought Sunday downloaded and installed. However the splash screen starts and then a minute latter disappears but program does not load. Sent Corel support winaudit and msinfo32 info they requested. They kept giving me the standard try this try that i did all they asked .

I have Paintshop pro painter and mirage express working but video studio 2018 ultimate does not load up.

Corel can't come up with a fix even had HP who said its Corel Video studio 2018 ultimate that is at fault.

Does anyone here know a fix before i request a full refund.

Welcome to the forum!

First off, when you open VS for the first time, it is incredibly slow to start up. In some cases it can take 3 or 4 minutes and perhaps even a little more, depending on your computer. This is because the newly opened program has to build databases for all its resources, and so it will not open fully until all the databases are built. Usually, though, you can see some related activity in the taskbar at the bottom of screen, indicating the databases are being built. But if you have opened VS and closed it again after a minute or two, the databases will probably not have been fully built, and so the next time you open it, it will go through the same process again.

Anyway, that's one possibility to perhaps explain what might be happening to you.

Another possibility is that the databases have been corrupted because they did not complete setting themselves up. Another thing you could try is to go to C:\Users\[Your Name]\AppData\Roaming\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio Pro (x64) and rename the 21.0 folder you should find there. That in effect contains the databases. Note that you will need to show hidden files if you cannot see AppData. Call the folder something like 21.0_OLD. Then restart VS, giving it plenty of time for the databases to be rebuilt and for VS to then open properly.

A third possibility will sound very strange. For historical reasons, the Corel programmers have left links in the program's code relating to the old Internet Explorer browser, despite the fact that few people use it today and despite Microsoft itself replacing it with the Edge browser in Windows 10 (though also leaving Internet Explorer in the Windows package). If you have perhaps used or tweaked IE or even removed it, this has been known to cause problems for some VS users. The trick is to go to Control Panel > Internet Options and choose the Advanced tab in the dialogue box which appears. Down towards the bottom of that tab there's a button labelled 'Reset' in the section headed "Reset Internet Explorer settings". Press that button, and try reopening VS again. This is at least worth trying even if you have never opened IE in Win 10.

A fourth possibility should -- now that I think about it -- have been listed first. When you first install and open VS, it tries to call home and bring up a small registration box. This of course requires an internet connection. So if by chance you have turned off your internet after installing VS, turn it back on again and try opening VS. It should only be needed for the registration process and you can turn it off again -- though of course you will need it again later to download any updates which might be issued for VS 2018.

Good luck!

The same thing happened to me today. Boot screen is shown for half a minute, then the program quits. I've contacted support about this. It worked fine 2 days ago, since then there was a major Windows update, I think.

Hmmm... I got the latest Win 10 update a few days ago. VS 2018 continues to open normally. However, one curious thing -- when I now open the Home page (which I seldom if ever go to), I get a message saying "You are offline. Some resources are unavailable." I am, of course, connected to the internet. I'll look into this further and report back. It may be related to the Windows update, but I have no way of knowing when this happened.

Ah, the joys of windows 10, wherein updates are automatic and you can't control when they happen. At least with win7, I can control when it happens and to a large extent, how much is relevant (for example, I have no interest in patches for daylight saving in canada, the currency symbols for afghanistan, and many similar things: all optional so I don't enable these for inclusion. But with a fully auto update all of that is in your machine, taking up memory space and potentially compute capacity even if it's to decide 'no, don't need this now').

OTOH, it's taken windows 10 3.5 years to reach near equivalence to win 7 in the world-wide usage stakes (depending on the stats source you check, win 10 is slightly ahead or slightly behind, at around 42-45%), and further penetration is becoming dependent on new hardware sales. I'm dreading the day my hardware fails. Altho if MS continues to emit win 10 updates (aka whole new replacement OS) like the recent build 1809 that borks so many machines, needing emergency fixes, the 2021 terminal date finish for win 7 may get further extended.

Still does not work. I noticed there are 2 instances of the "Corel Licensing Service by Arvarto" running.
Paint Shop ist installed too, which starts without problems.

This is really annoying.

Hi floyd_steinberg
Have you tried creating a new User Account as Administrator, then running Video Studio from there.
Recently I had need to create a new account for my grandson of 7 years, just to try to protect my files.
I noticed that some processes worked better using the new account, I then created a new account for myself and again an improvement, I do intend to eventually remove the original Admin account.

Oh I have windows 10 up to date and not had any issues running programs other than the welcome screen being white only for the first start after installation.

By the way have you reset the program by re-naming the 21.0 folder as Kens earlier reply? you may have missed that comment.

Hello! I was able to solve the problem.
For me, this was caused by the latest Intel Graphics Driver for the IRIS 540 graphics chipset, which caused a lot of other problems, too.
I installed last year's driver: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/downlo ... uct=126789
And bäm, everything works again.
Thank you all for your suggestions.

This is just another example that when "support" tells you to update everything they realy know/care nothing and just want's you off the line.

Well... Corel support answered very fast and stated I should try some standard procedures first and if that wouldn't help they'd try some more detailed fixes. Can't blame them. I found this solution by random when I noticed my screen's colours where off, searched for a solution and found someone on the microsoft forums who pointed at the Intel driver update. Edit: They did not tell me to update all drivers. The driver update was installed by Windows Update.
