Customize Pan and Zoom Strange Behavior
I just upgraded to 2018 and I am having a strange issue with pan and zoom. I have a video with two people in it and I'd like to zoom into one of their faces at a time and then zoom back out for a while and then zoom into the other face and back out. When I do this the second zoom starts to zoom into the first face and then snaps to the second. I am creating 4 key frames per zoom. The first one to keep zoomed out until I want to zoom in, the second to do the zoom in, the third to hold the zoom and then a 4th to zoom back out. Am I using these correctly for what I want to do? I even split the video into chunks so that it would only have one zoom in and out per clip but that is now affecting the clip beside it. Very strange behavior. I should note the I am using variable speed in the clips as well. Thanks for any help!

Re: Customize Pan and Zoom Strange Behavior
I think the Pan and Zoom function doesn't like stringing multiple actions. Use Customize Motion instead.
One option is to split the resource and apply separate P&Z to each. It will look seamless when rendered.

Re: Customize Pan and Zoom Strange Behavior
I did split the clips but then editing one affects the one next to it. Even if I didn't change anything in the clip I had open in the editor it will work once I hit OK but the clip next to it will be broken again. Edit that one, change nothing, hit OK, it works but the one from before is now broken. I will customize motion as suggested. Thanks

@btreinders: Could I ask you to look at the 'Share' page and confirm whether or no "Smart Render" is enabled or disabled, please?
If Smart Render is enabled, could you disable it and re-test to see if there is any difference. It sounds similar to a bug I recently raised which appears to be related to Smart Render.

Re: Customize Pan and Zoom Strange Behavior
It was on so I disabled it. It does not seem to help any with P&Z, if I zoom into one person and then back out and then into the second it will still zoom to the first person and then snap to the second one. I did not try to see if it affect other clips adjacent or not but assume it still would as well. Customize motion is working for what I need so far. Thanks @gewb!

Re: Customize Pan and Zoom Strange Behavior
Ok, I've just done something similar to what you are doing.
With just the one image in the timeline, I started by extending it to 15 seconds to give me something to play with. Then I selected P&Z and clicked 'customise'.
I next chose "Animated". After this I set the initial frame to zoom out, adding a 2nd frame that was moved and zoomed in on person #1. The 3rd frame zoomed out to a different position that the first frame. Next, I added another keyframe and zoomed in on person #2. Finally, I editing the last frame to zoom out.
I rendered the video twice and each came out fine. I also set the project properties to 1920x1080 25p and rendered at this rate. This was with "Smart Render" on.
What are your project settings?

Re: Customize Pan and Zoom Strange Behavior
I did render once and it showed the issue but mostly I just scrub through or use the play project function and that's where I see the issue as well. These are video clips if that matters and they are 4k. I am using smart proxy as well. I also zoom into one person and all the way back out for a while and then into the other.

Re: Customize Pan and Zoom Strange Behavior
Ok, I'll record some 4K content and repeat the experiment with that. Out of interest, what are the properties of the video clips you have recorded and what are the properties of your video project you are creating?
i.e. 3840x2160, 1920x1080, 25p, 30p, 50p, 60p, etc.
Just in case, what have you used to record the content? My mobile and GoPro can both record in 4K. The GoPro has more flexibility to change frame rates, etc.

Re: Customize Pan and Zoom Strange Behavior
Hi
Well I cannot get the Pan and Zoom to work correctly
The attached project file will open using 2018, please rename the file to use .vsp as its file extension
Access the pan and zoom to scrub the timeline
What should happen
Start in the middle, short pause
Then pan and zoom to top left
Then pan and zoom back to middle
And finally pan and zoom to the right, it is this last step that messes up.
The 5th - 6th keyframes should move the frame to the right
But goes up left to jump back to the right.
I also get those additional rogue keyframes being added, maybe part of Ease In,
But certainly not doing me any favours
Oh you will have to replace the clip with any image of your choice, drag and drop from library whilst holding the Ctrl key.

Re: Customize Pan and Zoom Strange Behavior
Stranger and stranger...
I downloaded your .vsp and loaded it by clicking the .vsp file. Worked perfectly. I tried to replace it with a 2.7K video file, but I was unable to copy the P&Z attributes across. I also tried using the <ctrl> key to insert my clip over the sample. That failed to keep the P&Z attributes too.
Quit VS and re-read your post. Loaded it again, exactly the same way.
This time it failed.

Re: Customize Pan and Zoom Strange Behavior
Probably the next thing you should check/advise on is which pan&zoom you are using. In 2018 there are 3, all with various features:
- one in the options page, edit tab (probably the original one, almost no features at all),
- one in the Fx filters list (been using this one for years) and
- one in the timeline tool bar (this one is new - 1st appeared with 2018, and it has, based on the custom panel presentation, the most customisable things)
The new zoom feature in the timeline tool bar seems to have bugs in it and has been critiqued a number of times over the last year.
I've found the video p&z filter in Fx to be the most reliable. I've used it to do what you describe as your desired result any number of times without issues. In fact, I use this filter with the heart object, 6 or 7 keyframes and zooming in or out between keyframes to create the effect of a beating heart as a demo of how a combination of P&Z, and keyframes can generate an interesting effect for video class students.
So my suggestion is to use the Fx Video Pan and zoom filter, use keyframes with zoom and sizing as you describe and I'm pretty sure you will get what you want.

Re: Customize Pan and Zoom Strange Behavior
Hi Guys
Ignoring any FX filters that can do P & Z we / I am working with the new designed Pan and Zoom for 2018
This tool was previously used for images and could not be applied to video accessed only from the Options Panel Edit tab
The 2018 update placed an icon for P&Z on the tool bar adjacent to the T3D icon.
The new P& Z can now be applied to video clips
I have to say that opening the P&Z from the tool bar or the old options edit may perform a little differently, I say may be a little different, as though one option does cause more problems?
Until Corel fix problems then its difficult to compare
For what its worth I have opened P& Z from the tool bar.
Unfortunately a feature of Video Studio 2018 showing issues for some users and not others is apparent and does cause confusion, with the thought “it must be your pc environment”
I have also experienced a Memory Issue crashing my pc, only happens when using Pan & Zoom that is extensive use of P&Z -- needs more investigation.
I intend to create a short smart package so we can all have a go at using the Pan & Zoom
All singing from the same songbook.
Using other options to create the pan and zoom is all well and good but does not address the problems in using this new 2018 feature

Re: Customize Pan and Zoom Strange Behavior
Hi Guys
I have created a Smart Package to test Pan and Zoom
I have added two images, the first with P&Z applied using the Options Panel P&Z
Trying to pan and zoom from 1 full screen to 2
Back to 1 at full screen then on to 3
It is this last section that messes up
I mentioned earlier an error regarding Insufficient memory
Working trying to fix this issue meant I added and deleted keyframes, a lot of tweaking, then the crash occurred, insufficient memory cause my pc to freeze where I had to turn off the power to reset, not good doing that.
Seems to be when using the P& Z from the tool bar, in addition I had those rogue keyframes being added.

I just tried with an HD clip from an iPhone and the exact same result. Second zoom goes to first person and then snaps to second. 4k video was 30p from an HTC 10. I'll just stick with customize motion for now. It works just fine for what I need to do. I wish they'd fix the 3D titles though. Works for a little bit after a fresh install and then stops. Says it's already open. See other thread.
