This is a bit odd, but I've created a second version of this script as kind of a proof of concept in direct response to a question by JoeB.
OpenAsLayer originally opened images using the File Open dialog. JoeB wanted to know if we could use the manage mode and open files as layers. Short answer, no. Scripting cannot touch manage mode. However, we can use the Pause Script to record a list of currently open images. Then run the script a second time and any new images will be copied over as new layers and closed. This will allow you to open as many images in as many different ways as you want. The script only cares about which images are new when you run it a second time.

You can download the script and test it for yourself

Re: Script - Open As Layer 2-step
Thanks LeviFiction. Will be testing this script shortly, time permitting.
As to your comment in the other thread as to why I prefer Manage mode to the Organizer, it's partly habit I guess, but mostly because in Manage mode I find it much easier to view a much larger number of images to find what I'm looking for. I find the Organizer much to confining in that regard.

Hi Joe,
In Edit mode with the organiser showing have you tried dragging the organiser boundary bar down to see a lot more smaller images or Up to see images in a larger view.
So perhaps a request to allow the organiser to display in thumbnail mode as it does in Manage mode is your answer. Unless there is something more that you use in Manage mode.
