choose paint brush tool
click the brush size
roll the mouse wheel -- Does the brush size change or does the wheel revert to zooming the image.

I just bought PSP 2019 and have the same problem with mouse wheele scroll. I can't change brush size etc by scrolling, instead the wheel reverts to zooming.
Any solutions to this annoying problem?

Hello maschatwellaar and welcome to the forum.

Actually your issue is different than the OP's. They wanted to be able to scroll through the font list with the mouse wheel and it sounds like you want to resize the brush using the mouse wheel.

To resize hold down the Alt key and drag the mouse with the left mouse button depressed.

You may be correct for PSP 2019. That would be sad, because in PSP x4-x9 and 2018, if you click in a box -- brush size, rotation, etc. -- whatever is inside the box will go up and down as the mouse wheel turns. I use that function all the time.
Had PS3, PSP3; Installed: PSP-4.12, 5.03, 6.02, 7.04 (liked it a lot & used it for years), 8.00, XI, x4.3.0.3, x6.2.0.20, x7.4.0.11, x8.3.0.13, x9.2.0.7; now using PSPx10 (PSP 2018; version 20.2.0.1 x64) on Win 10-64 b2004.

This works the same for PSP2019 as it does for previous versions, and Kathy's method works as well. So there are actually 2 methods to be able to use to change those attributes.

I believe that the OP's problem is that the focus has been put back on the image by doing something with the brush within the image (clicking with it, etc), which will return the scroll wheel to its default function of zooming the image. To be able to use the scroll wheel again to change brush size the user has to first go back to the size box and click in it to return focus of the wheel to that box.

I see you have Win 10. Perhaps you have 'Scroll Inactive Windows' turned on in your settings.
If I recall that caused me problems in programs until I turned it off.
If you go to the new Settings-->Devices-->Mouse
You should see on the right the option to turn on/off
'Scroll inactive windows when I hover over them.'

I think this is my problem. In my previous version (I think PSP x6) I would click on for example brush rotation, then would go back to the image and turn the mouse wheel, and I would see the brush rotation change, so I could make it excactly as as I wanted to. Now, when I click on brush rotation and turn the wheel the rotation will change (the numer in de box) but I can't see the change until I click the mouse (right or left) and see the end result, which makes it hard to get the right rotation.
For brush size kathy's method works fine, but I would like it for rotation also.

In that case there is something wrong with your PSP installation. When I click the boxes in PSP2019 for the various brush changes and then put my cursor on the image and use the mouse wheel the sizes, etc., change accordingly in both the box and on the image without having to click anything on the image. Once I do get the size, rotation, thickness, etc. that I want and then click to apply the brush then, of course, focus changes from the boxes to the image and if I want to use the wheel again to make further size, etc., changes I first have to again click on the boxes to make them the focus of the wheel.

So PSP 2019 works just like the previous versions. If it doesn't for you, you might have to reset the program.

@ehume,

Which part is important? I don't think it's any different from the info I gave in my earlier post in this thread, but perhaps I'm missing something. :-)

I thought there was a difference in the operation of the scroll / change brush size until I read Patara's "Perhaps you have 'Scroll Inactive Windows' turned on in your settings."

In Windows 10:
Open PSP - (acts the same in X9 and 2019)
Load an image and set to windowed mode -Window > Tabbed Documnts -- untick.

In Windows 10 Settings-->Devices-->Mouse and turn Scroll Inactive Windows Off
now
1. Select the paintbrush tool and a brush capable of showing rotation (not a circle) .
2. Hover your mouse cursor over the empty part of the workspace and roll the mouse wheel - the image should zoom. It does the same no matter where you hover your cursor - over the image over the paintbrush size or rotation.
3 Now click the Rotation box and roll the mouse wheel - you should see the numbers change and again it does not matter where you hover the mouse (so long as you do not click a button) so you can hover over the image and see the brush rotating.
Do the same over size box and the same occurs as Size is now the default until you click somewhere else.
4. Now hold down the Alt key and left click drag in the image and the brush size will now change - much faster than previous scrolling . Drag up to make smaller and down to make larger. When you release the button once more the default is the zoom image.

In Windows 10 Settings-->Devices-->Mouse and turn Scroll Inactive Windows On

Now you will find that anything you hover over now becomes the default and you must keep the cursor over that point to keep changing that setting . Anwhere else in the workspace or over the image and Image zoom becomes the default.
Holding down the Alt key and dragging in the image does the same as in step 4 above.
So for me the most practical setting is to have Scroll Inactive Windows Off. That way I must click a setting or window to make it active before the mouse wheel will work.

Now as Joe has mentioned if this does not occur there may be something wrong with your install.

I now discovered that with Windows 10 Settings-->Devices-->Mouse and turn Scroll Inactive Windows Off I can see the rotation (or size) change as I scroll the mouse, but only when I also move the mouse a bit. As long as I keep it in place, I can not see it change.....
I seemed to be a problem of the mouse, it works fine now with another mouse.

Reassuring when you consider that "features" introduced into PSP are liable to linger in subsequent versions, and most of us Win 7-64 users are going to have to migrate to that allegedly superior Win 10.
