Yesterday I attended a video related conference here in TA.
Most of it was about Premier pro and AE but, among other things I learn about FiLMiC
It's an app that takes over the camera and sets all to a proper usable videos.

Re: Smartphone shooting?
Interesting. Costs US$20.99. I have a pretty high end Android One (i.e. 8.1) 4K smartphone, but Filmic appears to be limited to 25/50 (or 30/60 fps) in all resolutions from 720P to 4K. OK for some purposes, I guess, but reviews in the Google Play Store criticise it for this limitation. I get considerably more leeway with my Osmo DJI Go app, though admittedly that is linked to the Osmo Mobile gimbal mount I use with that smartphone.

Well, sending it down under over the pacific is costly.
I don't need it as I don't have smartphone.
*I've just been asked to trim down a 90minutes iPhone mov for a family event I didn't attend. (Is it my punishment ?) VS/PS don't like it so I'll use one of the others...

Re: Smartphone shooting?
Maybe my Play Store is set to NZ$ -- I didn't look too closely, but had imagined it would by default be set to US$...
As for your iPhone movie, almost undoubtedly VS doesn't like it because it uses a variable frame rate. Putting it through a video converter with the same properties but constant frame rate will fix things...
