Capture Voiceover failure in 2018

Post by Davidk »

This is a report of a voiceover capture failure in the current version of Vs2018 (21.3.0.141) 64bit, running on an HP laptop g6-2002, with an AMD processor and chipset, and running an HDMI connection to a large wallscreen to duplicate what's on the smaller laptop display. The testing I've done on this platform points directly at 2018. What I am hoping is that someone has already noticed this and there is a fix.

So, the details.
Situation: a class tutoring the use of 2018, and a student reports she cannot now (but could previously) capture a voiceover: her system gives a "cannot find wave in device" error. On the tutors laptop (mine, basic detail above) fault is replicated - using the always-on microphone built into the device, always with a vsp loaded, and all but once with no files in an empty, new project timeline space. Could not resolve in class, more testing at home.

So, repeat testing in a similar environment - same laptop, same HDMI connection to a large HD display with HDMI inputs, and all in the condition where - once - capture detected the micorohone on the laptop. For tutoring reasons, the laptop has 3 VS versions installed: x9, X10 and 2018 - all 64bit and patched to the current version. Successively loading 2018, x10 and X9 with an empty timeline space, I clicked on the record/capture icon, and then clicked again on the microphone icon labelled voiceover. These are the results I got with the HDMI connection live and working:
- 2018

- X10
X10 voiceover 20181031.jpg
- X9
X9 voiceover 20181031.jpg
Removing the HDMI connection and repeating that test with 2018 on the laptop - same failed result.
I even tried plugging a known working external headset (mic/earphones combo) to the audio connectors on the laptop, and repeated the 2018 test: again, fail - no wave in device detected.

It's pretty clear that 2018 is the base cause of this - 2 prior versions of VS both detect the wave in device correctly and do the level test (in the panel selecting the voiceover microphone source should display) OK - and I know I've used the voiceover capture with 2018 earlier this year, but probably not for several months. What changed 2018 then? Well, SP3 came out in late july.

The question: has anyone else experienced this? Is there a fix, or is this yet another 2018 bug?

If there is no fix available, what sort of work around is there available for a student relatively un-versed in video editing and now finds that adding a voice commentary to a 2018 project is beyond (cannot do) the up-to-date software?
Help please.

Project Properties using Surround Sound causes the voice over to fail.
Change the project properties to use stereo 2.0 not 5.1

This is a known issue and has been reported to Corel Support and development teams during testing, many times, effects all versions of VS.
David search the centercode forum for "Outstanding"

of course your problem could be different?

David,
Using a wireless headset to carry out tests and using the Win7 desktop.
Both of my screens, one connected with a HDMI cable, completed the tests successfully
It is of concern that whilst you are actually recording the voice over, nothing shows in the timeline, but when the recording is stopped, it appears in the timeline

Hi Trevor,
Thanks a bunch for that. Relief all over. And it works for each of the different properties formats (DVD, Mobile, AVCHD) that are set. Clearly the students vsp properties were set to AVCHD and I got that (the 'message') when I loaded her project file for review in class. Changing to Mobile format (where a lot of the HD 1920x1080 sets live) and there was no sign of surround sound.

Robert,
That error message always means 'cannot find a microphone', and of course without that you get zilch. And it was the microphone found issue which I was looking when doing the tests on prior versions. If x9 and x10 can find it, something is clearly buggy about 2018 if it can't. Nice to know it's 'known 'issue'. The recording only appearing after the recording has stopped has been noted, but it's not a fail condition even if it's a bit different to prior versions.

Hi
There is also another issue regard Surround Sound, involves setting our PC audio to use Surround Sound, most users would have Stereo set.
Then try doing a Live Screen Capture.
