X8 Pro Upgrade to Ultimate 2018

Post by babyleon »

I am considering this upgrade to Ultimate 2018 as my current version of X8 (18.5.0.23 64bit Pro) is acting up (shuts down randomly) and I can't get any updates to load (the "unable to determine my current version" error). But before jumping into a different fire, I would like to know:

1. Can I open projects created in X8 Pro in Ultimate 2018 with no major glitches?

2. Will libraries created in X8 Pro projects be preserved in Ultimate 2018? (This was an issue in some VS upgrades years ago.)

Thank you very much.

Yes, VS2018 will run projects created in X8. VS is backwards compatible - meaning projects created in older versions will run on newer or the newest version, and I've regularly done just that. You can also save a current project in an older version format (limited usually to the 2 immediately prior versions) but there may be warnings about loss of data (eg, if you've used a feature in the newer version that doesn't exist in the older one). I've found that facility useful in class when a student has an older software version and I'm saving a copy of demo changes in a vsp for that student to use at home.

There are methods of transferring library contents between versions, but the board admins (lata/ken) have that process down pat. I'll leave it to them to advise.

Edit update
the latest version of X8 is 18.6.0.6. This is the 8.5 update with several hotfixes applied: You will find that you can download the updates and hotfixes separately from the Corel support site and locally apply them (execute the update file/s), and it may fix your X8 version stability issues.

It's supposed to, however, experience shows that not always to be the case if depending on what features and filters have been applied. As discussed on this forum, there is no guarantee that a newer version of VS will successfully open a working copy of a VSP created in an older version of VS (see viewtopic.php?f=1&t=57704).

As mentioned above, there is no guarantee so if you really want all X8 VSPs to open in an editable state, then I wouldn't uninstall X8 despite installing VS2018 unless you are really pressed for HDD space. I've also found that VS2018 experiences frequent crashes and so more rely on X10 to edit and render.
