Eraser Tool Settings?

Post by Linda Lou »

What would cause the eraser tool to erase at about 50% opacity, even though it is showing 100% opacity? I have reset default Presets for eraser and paint brush. When I select the default brush tip for the eraser it does not erase cleanly. I never had this problem in my many years with PSP 8.1, so there must be a setting for 2018 that is causing this?

See if a texture is active.

Thank you. :) Yes, it was that Texture setting. I thought I had unchecked everything. Ugh! Well, it had been a long day and it was almost midnight.
Just curious: Did PSP 7 and 8 revert to defaults when closed? I don't know why I never had that problem with them.

Strange I just took an image and promoted it to a layer ,
Turned the Texture on - Bricks
Used Eraser , Backgrounf Eraser and could not repeat your problem
Used Paintbrush and the Bricks texture showed with the painting so Texture was still active.
Used Clone Brush and Texture again showed,

In all cases of using the Eraser tools I had a clear 100% erasure.
If I had the density tool set to a low value then the eraser did not give a clear erasure.

Same thing in PSP 8 and 2018

For the sake of discussion, when I was troubleshooting my problem, the general Eraser did not do a clean job. However, the Background Eraser did fine. I wanted both to be working as they should. I tried multiple images and nothing helped until I unchecked the Texture that I'd used (and forgotten about) the day before. I'll make a note of Density as well just in case that happens again.

When a texture is active in the Background color (Fill), the texture shows when erasing. This behaviour doesn't exist in PSP X9.

Ahh thats it . Thanks Jean-Luc. I had not tested with the Texture set as the Background / fill only as the Foreground Stroke.
So if there is a problem with a paintbrush tool (any) then go to the Presets for that tool and reset it to Default and then go to the each of the Material Properties boxes and make sure that the Texture is turned off for both.
This shopuld also be included when you reset that tool to default.
One thing I found interesting was that you can set a different texture for the foreground and background and then on an image Erase to leave the background texture and unerase to replace it with the foreground texture.
Not sure if this is of any practical use .
