Video Studio 2018 file mismatch [1081:1:3]

Post by mjncad »

I've created a bunch of movie scenes (.VSP files) in Video Studio 2018 Ultimate and now I get the [1081:1:3] file mismatch error when I try an put those scenes into my master movie. My movie scenes were created with the same software.

Good grief, this error has been floating around in some form since 2011 without a fix. Once I finish my 20-minute movie; I'm ditching Video Studio for something else. This version is so buggy as to be near worthless. I don't need the aggravation this crapware serves up in spades.

Hi
Does each project open in its own right as a project without any errors? No relink requests etc.
How are you trying to add the VSP?
I assume you have opened a new project and trying to insert the VSP to the timeline, a process known as nesting
First you should insert the VSP’s to the library, I would create a new media page for those VSP’s
Now dragging the VSP to the library should work
Whilst dragging read the tool tip relating to the Shift key

I was wondering if mjncad understands that what he calls "movie scenes" are not in fact movies or video. He might not be aware that VSP files are project files (Video Studio Project = VSP). They are in fact small text files which contain no video -- just links to what video is included in that project, where it is located and what editing has been done to it. If he is wanting to create -- and later include -- real video scenes in a larger project, then he would need to render each VSP file into real video. And of course that is done by going to Share and choosing a format for output.

But once understanding what his VSP files are, and some of their limitations, then nesting -- as explained by lata -- is another possibility.

Hi Lata:

Thanks for the prompt reply.

Yes, the sub-projects open A-OK; though sometimes the software asks for relinking, and sometimes it doesn't, even though I haven't moved or deleted any content. There is no rhyme or reason as to if and when the relinking message crops up.

I'm trying to insert the VSP's to the library via the 'Insert Media' right click, and also drag-and-drop from Windows Explorer. I get the same error message either way.

The opening credits sub-project dropped onto the timeline just fine and I flattened it via the SHIFT key per the tool tip.

Ken:

Thanks for the prompt reply. Yes, I'm aware that VSP files are just a text file, XML file or some other sort of data file and settings. I used 'scenes' for lack of a better word with my original post. I would rather insert (nest) flattened VSP files to save disk space.

I ended up rendering each sub-project into a MP4 file and inserted it into the main or parent project. I wanted to avoid doing this to save disk space. It seems that Video Studio chokes when the VSP projects files reach a certain size and/or complexity level.

Hi mjncad

If when opening the project / vsp you receive a relink request then the program cannot find the files.
This should not happen provided your original files remain in the same location as when added to the project, the files have not been changed or re-named?
Issues may arise if you are storing the files on an external drive, the drive may be turned off when opening the project or the drive letter is updated by the external drive, that has been known to cause problems.
As I say you should not see the relink, when we do we can usually find the culprit.
Nesting
Whether you add the VSP as flattened or editable does not change the size of the VSP, either way it has to contain the details of all clips used and edits applied.
Only by rendering to say Mpeg4 would increase the output file size.
You mention having a large complex VSP, I cannot comment on whether that in itself would be a problem with nesting? But again would not be a reason for the re-link.

One more limitation when using Nested Projects
We cannot add a nested project to the library, so if you have already nested the project it will not insert to the library.
If you have already added a VSP to the library then open the VSP in its own right, adding another VSP will nest that project.
the VSP in the library will no longer work?

The relink error message is random, and when it can't relink it asks me to delete the thumbnail from the library. It doesn't matter if I do this or not. Once I finalized each sub-project/child project; I made sure to save the project to capture the latest settings that might have happened. I also haven't moved or renamed any files once sub-projects were finalized.

Issues may arise if you are storing the files on an external drive, the drive may be turned off when opening the project or the drive letter is updated by the external drive, that has been known to cause problems.

All of my video projects are stored on my computer's hard drive.

As I say you should not see the relink, when we do we can usually find the culprit.
Nesting

The only nested VSP file is the main/parent project file that contains all the children projects. At least that was the plan before the error message cropped up.

Whether you add the VSP as flattened or editable does not change the size of the VSP, either way it has to contain the details of all clips used and edits applied.

Agreed.

Only by rendering to say Mpeg4 would increase the output file size.

Agreed, which is why I wanted to render one MPG4 file from the parent VSP. But I ended up rendering the middle children to MPG4 files, and then inserting them between the beginning and ending child VSP files that contain the opening and closing credits. So now I'll render yet another even larger MPG4 file of the complete video.

You mention having a large complex VSP, I cannot comment on whether that in itself would be a problem with nesting? But again would not be a reason for the re-link.

I have eleven children VSP files; two are the opening and closing credits, and the remainder are the specific subjects comprising the video.

One more limitation when using Nested Projects
We cannot add a nested project to the library, so if you have already nested the project it will not insert to the library.
If you have already added a VSP to the library then open the VSP in its own right, adding another VSP will nest that project.
the VSP in the library will no longer work?

I've avoided nesting within nesting (e.g. grandchildren) to minimize the potential for problems; but I still get the file mismatch error, etc. I even tried starting a new project and maxed out the number of overlay, title and music tracks in case that was the problem. It didn't help.

I should have stuck with VSP X8 as it wasn't anywhere near as buggy as VSP 2018. I usually upgrade every other release.

I don't expect Hollywood professional quality software; but jeez if I wanted this much frustration I would have stuck with Windows Movie Maker. If I could remember all the bugs and hassles I've encountered with my most ambitious project yet; I'd have quite the grocery list. It just seems that Corel is spending more time and money redoing the interface to make the product look improved without fixing the running gear under the hood. An added feature now and then hardly makes the hassle worthwhile. After I do one last final run through; I'll upload to YouTube and then begin the search for a different product.

mjncad, unfortunately you are correct, this is why I'm still with X9.2 , the last practical version.

Hi
Sorry for the extra questions but just trying to find a reason for this.
Referring to re-linking
When I said saving files to an external drive, I was referring to the actual video / image files used within your project and not just the VSP.
Second issue…
The Mismatch error, I am unsure if that is associated with the VSP or the files used within the vsp.
You did mention that all VSP’s were created using the same program, but has that program had service packs applied since saving the first VSP, if so is it the oldest VSP that’s causing the problem or is it random
If you have 11 VSP’s, clearly some are shorter, used as an intro.
Which VSP’s are causing problems with nesting? How many of your VSP are you unable to add to the library?

That's OK; I'm convinced that Corel dropped a deuce with VSP 2018 Ultimate.

I check for updates manually, and Corel says the program is up to date.

All cause trouble but the opening and closing credits, which are the simplest.

Asik's comment is just fine, and reinforces the fact that Corel needs to get off their butt and fix their software.

I found the culprit, at least on my system. I did short test.
I get that error code when I try to import a VSP into library with "insert media" but the source videos are "unknown" hence at different path than the path they where in when the VSP was created.
Soon as I "unhide" those videos, I'm able to "insert media" these VSP's.
The Relink feature pop up only when one File>Open project and load the VSP.

So mjncad it looks as your files where on external drive when you edit and now it has different drive letter.

**I should do a test and "hide" only one file from within a complex vsp to check if it will hurt it.
***So... I made a 6 Jpg's auto slide show. Save the vsp.
deleted one image from it's folder, that vsp was no longer been accepted as insert media.
soon as I restore that file ... no problem.
So .... even just a single file is missing from a 1634 files vsp, it will no longer can be imported.
It must be loaded first > Relinked> and save again.

Over to you mjncad

Hi
Thanks Asik
To insert to the library yes the VSP has to be ok with no re-link issues, can be opened as a normal VSP.
Any project that requires re-linking will not import to the library.
Any project containing another VSP, nested, cannot be inserted to the library.

Mjncad
Can you please confirm that you are able to open the VSP as a normal project using File – Open Project and that you do not see a re-link request.
Then close the project, try importing the same VSP o the library.

It sounds like Asik found the problem as I think there may be a hidden track in one or more VSP child projects.

I can assure everyone that all files are stored on the PC's internal hard drive as I built the computer myself.

After I get the video posted to YouTube; I'll 'smart package' the parent and child projects, delete the unused reference material, and then pull the plug on Video Studio 2018. I don't need this level of frustration from the product.

I wish Corel would be as diligent at squashing bugs as they are at putting fresh frosting on the UI every release and pestering its customers with incessant email and popup ads.

My thanks to everyone that took an interest in this problem and offered suggestions to fix it.

Hi
It would be nice to pin this down but I don’t recall Asik mentioning hidden tracks.
On its own a hidden track should not cause a problem unless the clips on that track require re-linking and that would give a popup error to re-link the files.
The relink request would show whether the track is hidden or not.
