A 4K video will certainly play on a HD screen -- but it will only show as a HD video on that screen. Equally, a HD video will play on a 4K screen, but it will still only be a HD video.

This is valid only for the last generation of the screens which supports 4k videos. They should understand the 4k video, to able to play them even in lower HD resolution. My point is that it should. In the same way that HD video will play on SD screens: the screen just displays what it is capable of.

I have a 6 year old Samsung HD TV that has no problems playing 4K videos.
