Jerky Panning on rendered footage
I am sure this problem has been spoken about many times but still frustrating........following a recent multi camera project, I have rendered some Bluray folders using the default settings, ready to later Burn a bluray disc (Selecting Share/Disc/Bluray etc. When veiwing the rendered project,(although the camera mounted on a tripod with very steady panning on some scenes ) the footage is a little jerky rather than the smooth panning when looking at the raw files ? I am sure this is something to do with 50i footage from 3 cameras then be rendered at 25fps with the default settings. I have tried to read about this problem and am still playing with different settings and re-rendering. Eventually, I want a project on Bluray Disc and USB/Hardrive, so can anyone guide me to the correct method for this ?
Thanks in anticipation

Re: Jerky Panning on rendered footage
I too have found that working at 25fps can produce jerky footage. I notice it more on any text that I add to the video. Panning issues tend to derive from panning too fast for the scene.
I have found that the jerkiness can be affected by how you are recording something and what you are playing it back on.
My TV can make it worse as it's a 600Mhz screen. My laptop refresh rate is 60fps, even when I plug it into the TV or a monitor.
Sometimes I upload a test piece to YouTube, making sure that it doesn't go public. I can then watch this back using my TV's YouTube app.
Check what you are recording at too. Not all the cameras I use can record at 25fps. My camcorder, for example, records at 50p.
As a result I not tend to work at 50p. Something that Blu-ray can cope with. It takes a little more processing power and produces larger files, but it works. The only issue I have after is that I can't always play the file using my TV.
YouTube accepts 50p uploads and will play them back at a rate the device can cope with.

If you are working / rendering to Avchd the file extension will be MTS / m2ts
Try renaming the file to use MPG, then try playing on your tv

Re: Jerky Panning on rendered footage
Thanks Trevor.
I'll watch for that one in the future. I actually have 2 TV that I use for testing. They are different models and some Codecs work on one and not the other.
I tend to use WMP to "cast" the video to the TVs but I can and do sometimes use a memory stick too.

Re: Jerky Panning on rendered footage
Thanks for your thoughts Guys.............I have had this problem before and it gets ever more frustrating, I am very careful when I occasionally Pan Or Zoom as this is where the problem is noticed. The project is a family wedding video and I want to give them a Bluray plus the files on a USB stick. The first file I rendered using the default settings for Bluray and then played back the stream file from the BLURAY folder on my tv through a streamer as I always do before I burn discs. It`s just jerky on the Pan & Zoom bits but the rest is fine. I just thought it might be the Canon Camera`s 50i setting and then the default 25 rendering setting that might cause the problem ?? Should I in future, record using the camera`s 25p setting ?? Is there some other settings I ought to try in VS ??
Will just keep trying different settings and re-rendering !

Re: Jerky Panning on rendered footage
You could try it in 25p mode. Also see if you can change the exposure times.

Re: Jerky Panning on rendered footage
Hi Yugman
You say using Multi Cameras
What are the properties of each cameras recordings before rendering using Video Studio?
Right click the clip on the timeline and choose properties.
Do that for all cameras?
Are all cameras using the same resolution, frame type and frame rate.
Frame types can be confusing in their terminology
A frame type of 50i (interlaced) is the same as a frame type of 25fps (also interlaced) unless shown as 25P (Progressive)
Bluray can only use 25P with a frame size of 1280 x 720 ( as far as I know also use 50P with 1280 x 720, would have to check that)
When using 1920 x 1080 an interlaced frame type is used.
Video Studio has its limitations when burning Bluray discs, if using the default settings will use 1920 x 1080 x 25fps interlaced – upper field.

Re: Jerky Panning on rendered footage
If you are recording 50i stay in that format till the end: a movie on disc or USB. Do not convert it to 25p.yugoman1 wrote:...I just thought it might be the Canon Camera`s 50i setting and then the default 25 rendering setting that might cause the problem ?? Re: Jerky Panning on rendered footage
Hi
Knowing the actual properties of the original video will help in suggesting the output settings.
Right click the clip on the timeline and choose properties.
You do not say what type of disc as that can influence the frame type required
Bluray using 1920 x 1080 has to use 25fps interlaced ( for HD would use Upper Field) aka 50i
SD DVD has to use 720 x 576/480 at 25fps or 25p
1280 x 720 would allow the use of progressive frames.
50i is the same as 25fps interlaced ( confusing to say the least)
25P is frame based aka progressive.
Video studios burner render/ conversion settings will not allow us to select a setting that is not DVD or Bluray compliant. unfortunately does not allow us to choose all settings that are Bluray compliant, Corel need to do a bit of catching up to comply with the Bluray standards.
If your original video is 50i then you can use that for your discs
Changing the output to Progressive 25P may be appropriate for internet or PC playback

Re: Jerky Panning on rendered footage
Thanks Trevor, I have clicked and looked at properties, they are all the same (I use all Canon cameras, and try to use the same settings) Pal HDMV, H264 UFF, 1920 x 1080, and 25,000 FPS
The disc I will be burning is BLURAY, but I want to give the files also on a USB Stick (probably MP4)

Re: Jerky Panning on rendered footage
Hi
You may have been best to create a screenshot of the properties panel save as a Jpeg to attach to the post.
So what type of video file is it MTS ?
What is the data rate? I would guess about 18000kbps.
If mts then the video will be Bluray compliant.
From a new project--when we add the video to the timeline we are prompted to match the project properties, yes to that. (oh – view the details tab – the video properties show on the right-hand panel, can paste those details to your post instead of creating an image)
After completing the project, share Same as Project Properties or Same as first clip will create a mts Bluray compliant file.
To Burn the disc-- New project Share – Disc - Bluray adding the Mts file here.
I have some details written here regarding the process I use to burn a Bluray and DVD discs.
http://lata.me.uk/corel/all.htm
Video Studio 2018
There have been some reports of Smart Proxy affecting render quality for MP4, deselecting the Smart Proxy option seems to improve quality. Don’t know if this affects MTS?
I also set Best in F6 preferences – Edit tab - for Resample Quality
To convert to Mpeg4
Again an issue using VS 2018 the default MPEG-4 templates, they seem to use NTSC at 30 instead of Pal at 25fps, you should use the “+” to modify the settings to use 25fps
You do have a choice of interlaced or progressive, you should try both options to check quality, I think progressive aka Frame Based may be more suitable for internet and pc usb playback.
As for Pan and Zoom jerky video, can you confirm that is only on the rendered video and not the originals.
The Mpeg4 rendering issue using 30fps instead of the correct 25fps could attribute to that?
