Managing Brush Categories?

Post by Linda Lou »

Brushes.PNG
Hi all,
I'm not doing well researching how to create categories for my brushes, so I'm back with more questions.
In my 2018 Brushes Resource Manager there are a few Categories already created, but I would like to create more because, for example, I have many Halloween and Christmas brushes. There are no categories showing up for either even though their file names begin with "Halloween" and "Christmas". In fact, some of the already created categories have only one brush in them. I know there are many more that are not showing up. (Example above.)
1. As in the example, where is PSP pulling these file names from, but not including others in the same set?
2. How do I create categories so that I do not have to scroll through hundreds of brushes to find a specific one?
3. How do I add more brushes to a category that already exists?
4. If I delete the categories that PSP already has listed so that I can create (better) more comprehensive categories, will it delete the individual brushes in those categories? :|

I am curious as to where you obtained your screenshot.
It does not look like that of 2018, When I check the categories I have three buttons on top as shown below. Yours only shows the View Types button and not the Resources Manager and File Locations.
01Brushorganisation.jpg
My brushes from 2018 include the categories - All, Artistic, Brushes. Media Brushes and Stamps and no trees .

So will assume you have imported or created your trees and placed them in the Tree Brushes category folder.

I will go through the steps to create a category called Spooky Trees

The folder and brushes will go into this location

C:\Users\*username*\Documents\Corel PaintShop Pro\2018\Brushes

Each compatible brush consists of two files eg

BrushTip_ekrspookytree 001.PspScript
ekrspookytree 001.PspBrush

1. I used windows explorer and navigated to the Brushes folder mentioned above ...2018\Brushes , and set up a new folder Spooky Trees
2. Opened Spooky Trees and then copied the two files for one brush mentioned above.
3. Started PSP 2018 , set up a blank document and chose the Brush tool. Clicked the down arrow and observed that my Spooky Trees folder category was there and it contained only one tree which was the only one I had copied to that folder..

4. Closed PSP 2018 and then copied the rest of the spooky trees into that folder ( I had downloaded them from a PSP Brushes site so they were all in the compatible form and did not need to be Imported as one does with Photoshop Brushes.)

5. Opened PSP 2018 as in 3 and there were all my 15 spooky tree brushes.

This procedure can be done for any category you like and any number of brushes.

You can of course use the Resources manager if your brushes are already there by selecting those brushes then Move then navigating to the Brushes folder in your ...2018\Brushes and then creating a new folder and naming that . The files are then moved from the main part of Brushes into that folder. More complex that way - I prefer to just do the rearranging while PSP is closed from Windows Explorer.

Thank you for the information. My screenshot is from PSP 2018. It is what I see if I click on the Resource Manager button.
When I've been downloading brushes I've extracted them to Documents > Corel PaintShop Pro > 2018 > Brushes. I did not create any categories myself, so that is why I want to delete the trees category and 2 or 3 others that show up. Those brushes must have been inside additional folders when I saved them? 99% of those in 2018 are PS brushes that I've imported because I have not found many PSP sites for tubes, brushes, gradients as we used to find in the "old days".

Just to confirm, I will need to create folders: Trees, Halloween, Christmas, etc. in Documents > Corel PaintShop Pro > 2018 > Brushes and move the existing 2 files (script and brush) for each brush to those folders?
Edit: Done and the brushes still work! :D I did lose one set in the mess I created before your help, but thanks to my backups I added them back. What a chore, but now it's done. Thank you so much for your help. I should have asked earlier instead of fiddling around in Resource Manager.

Good to know. Easy when you find out. It is a pity that the Resource Manager does not have a New Folder / New Category button so you can do it all within PSP easily.
Yes I thought your image may have been from Jasc PSP 7 as it seemed so sparse. If you had included the right hand side showing Delete Rename, Copy and Move it would have been clearer.

After your help I was doing so well and felt very organized and productive until I tried to copy my brushes to my other computer. :?
What is the exact procedure for transferring brush files from one computer to another?

Both are running PSP 2018. I thought perhaps some do not show up because they may have been the ones that were imported using my old PSP 8.1, but even the NEW custom brushes that I created myself using the first computer's 2018 are not showing up. For those, there doesn't seem to be a PspBrush file, but only the .PspScript.

I thought maybe installing 8.1 and directing 2018 to the Brushes would help, but 8.1 simply refuses to install on my Windows 10 v. 1803. Using the install disk, the installer keeps asking to insert the disk (which is already inserted). After three attempts I gave up.

Sneakernet: Copy your brushes to a USB drive (thumb drive) and transfer them. Or over-the-net transfer.
Had PS3, PSP3; Installed: PSP-4.12, 5.03, 6.02, 7.04 (liked it a lot & used it for years), 8.00, XI, x4.3.0.3, x6.2.0.20, x7.4.0.11, x8.3.0.13, x9.2.0.7; now using PSPx10 (PSP 2018; version 20.2.0.1 x64) on Win 10-64 b2004.

That is exactly what I did. Any other suggestions?

To be clear, once they are on the second computer, not all brushes show up in 2018 if I try to use them.

What I did:
1. on Computer 1 go to the brush location and copy the brush folder(s) you want to transfer to the other computer.
2. Copy those folders to a new folder on a USB drive or an external USB hard drive. I named the new bolder Brushes . (Yes very original name I know).
in my case the location was:

C:\Users\*UserName*\Documents\Corel PaintShop Pro\2018\Brushes

and it contained these folders:

022018BrushLocation.jpg
and the Creepy Trees folder contained these files
03CreepyTrees.jpg
3. I then safely removed the USB stick / drive and connected it to the other computer
4. I opened up the Brushes folder on computer 2 which coincidentally also had the same address :

C:\Users\*UserName*\Documents\Corel PaintShop Pro\2018\Brushes

and copied the folders Creepy Trees and spooky trees into that folder.

(I did this with PSP 2018 open just to test along the way if I needed to close PSP 2018 on computer 2 but no, the brushes were immediately available)
Your copied over brushes should then be available on Computer 2.

That is the procedure I used several times last weekend. Brushes on both computers are in the same directory. The newest custom brushes that I created do not have the .PspBrush - only the .PspScript is listed. They, show on Computer 2 when I open brushes as a black dot along with the name of each brush.

Lacking a better way, I finally used the brushes on Computer 1 to create the same images and saved them as tubes. I copied each tube to Computer 2 and then opened a transparent background image on 2 that I exported as a custom brush on Computer 2. That seemed to be the only way to get them on Computer 2, but extremely time consuming!

I have no idea why all brushes won't transfer as usable brushes.
Maybe the computer is not copying all files in the sub folders because I copied the entire Brushes folder?

The PSPScripts are the brush presets and won't always have a corresponding PSPBrush image file. Like when you save a square brush with a small thickness and a set rotation. Or if you have multiple preset settings for the same brush head.

I haven't read every post in this topic. Had you tried the Import brush option? File -> Import -> Custom brush

Obviously, you shouldn't need to but if it worked it would be far less time consuming than your method.

Had you tried the Import brush option? File -> Import -> Custom brush
I imported the old PSP 8.1 brushes that wouldn't show up. That was because I had backups of the original downloads on a disc. I did not try importing from the flash drive because I noticed that only the script file was on there. If some brushes have only that, and don't need the .PspBrush I'll try importing from there the next time I have to transfer a brush - which probably will be tomorrow.

Thanks for the info. I thought all brushes have 2 files. Everything I've read mentions when sharing brushes to be sure to include both files. I'm glad I've now learned otherwise. 8)
