Simple way to quickly remove background?

Post by minnow »

Is there a simple way to to erase backgrounds in PSP 2018 - e.g., Photoshop (magic eraser) or Paint.net (magic wand select + Delete)? The background eraser tool on its own is laborious. I assume PSP has this ability, but I've searched the online help and tutorials, and don't see this concept anywhere. I can obviously use the magic wand to select the object, but not sure how to then erase the background without resorting to the background eraser.

Thanks

Hi

Try selecting the Object
Selection (Alt+S) – Invert (Ctrl+ Shift + I) will now select the background – delete to remove selection.

Note also that the background layer needs to be promoted to a raster layer to allow transparency.
You can also try Image > Object Extractor.

Thanks. If I use the magic wand or the smart selection brush to select the object, then invert selection and delete, it appears to delete the selected object, not the background. Does the procedure you suggested require certain presets for either tool in order to work? For my edification, I tried toggling the inside/outside drop-down-list value, but got the same result both times.

If inverting deletes the selected object then either the selection has not actually been inverted or you already had the background selected.

Try this: Make your selection. Go to Selections -> Edit Selection

The selected area will be colored red. Next, go to Selections -> Edit Selection to turn off the editing.

Then go Selections -> Invert

Then go Selections -> Edit Selection

Has the red area changed?
