This issue is minor but I find it annoying. I use PSP 2018, and I don't recall the behavior in earlier versions, but I simply may have forgotten. The title of this post pretty much says it all. If I create a rectangle using the Selection tool and then choose to expand the selection, the corners get rounded. Filling or not filling the selection or promoting the selection to a layer does not alter this behavior, nor does trying to make the new boundaries from the other direction, i.e., using the magic wand to select the area around the rectangle and decreasing that selection. This is also independent of whatever amount I choose to expand the selection. Further, it persists if I use the Pre-shape rectangle and then convert the vector image to a raster layer.
I hope the attached image will illustrate this. Sure would like a solution to this if anyone can help!
Thank you.

Fantastic! Thank you for directing me to this script — I'm sure it's the answer I was looking for. This thread can be closed with my gratitude.

That's what the script does actually, and also saves a couple of the steps where you have to drill down in the menu for items. If you follow the link Kathy provided to the script the full explanation is there along with the link for downloading the script. A lot of people seem to think it's useful because it has been downloaded 165 times to date.Joelle wrote:Or:

Re: Expanded rectangular corners become rounded
Those icons are on the toolbar (I use PSPX9).
Can't remember if I put them there, but I don't think so.
This is what my workspace looks like, likely not the same as everyone else's.
I wish I could attach a larger image..

Re: Expanded rectangular corners become rounded
First, it looks like you have two toolbars - the original one that comes with PSP, and underneath it a second, custom toolbar.Joelle wrote:Those icons are on the toolbar (I use PSPX9).

That said, I'm not sure what this has to do with the subject of this thread. Am I missing something?

Re: Expanded rectangular corners become rounded
It doesn't really
Just thought I'd show what my toolbar(s) look like, as you hinted that there was a lot of digging to get to that icon.
On my toolbar there is no digging

Re: Expanded rectangular corners become rounded
I assume you're referring to my comments in the post where I posted the script. Here's what I was referring to:
Without the script, when you want to expand a selection and make sure it expands with square corners, here are the steps you have to take"
1) Create your selection
2) Click on Selections, and in the dropdown menu go to Modify, and then on the flyout go to Expand and click it.
3) Enter the number of pixels you want to expand by in the dialogue that opens, and click OK.
4) Go to the Tool Options bar and click the Create Selection From...Current Selection button.
With the script the steps are:
1) Create your selection
2) Click the script icon, which automatically opens the Expand dialogue.
3) Enter the number of pixels you want to expand and click OK.
So the second step is the one I called "drilling through menus, because you have to open the selection menu, then mouse down to the Modify option, then over to the Expand option and click on it to get the dialogue to enter the number of pixels. The script does that menu stuff automatically to open the expand dialogue. AND it also automatically invokes the Create Selection From...Current Selection command, so the user doesn't have to do that either.
I just happen to be a person who gets finds it irritating to have to click on an item and then scroll through dropdown menus to get what I want and then the flyout sub-menu to finally get what I'm looking for, when one click on a script icon that's easily accessiblee on a toolbar will do that form me.
