I am working on a VSP project file that after editing is about 2.90 GB large. No problem in editing this project. However, when I tried to "Create Video File" or "Create Disk" by doing either a "Burn" or "Fit to Burn" to the hard drive, the program stops at 84% rendering. Before clicking "Burn" the info on the bar at the bottom said 1hour 59 min/7.5GB........ 4.7 GB disk" The rendered file is about 5.16 GB when it stoped rendering at 84%. This 84% product can be played back up to the 84% mark.
Is there a setting that was not configured properly? I followed the "Recommendation" settings posted on top of this VideoStudio forum.
Could this problem be solved if I update VideoStudio 9.0 with the Update pack since it support 2-layer burning? I had initially updated VS 9.0 but after the update I could not Playback the VSP file. (Clicking the Play icon it returned immediately to the Stop position), so I uninstalled and re-installed VS9.0 without installing the Update pack and Playback is fine.

Hi bimbing

I am not sure what, where or when your rendering fails.
Also I do not understand the 2.9 Gb large comment??????
What are your captured clip properties (Mpeg—Dv-Avi)????

You say:- However, when I tried to "Create Video File" or "Create Disk" by doing either a "Burn" or "Fit to Burn" to the hard drive

So which process failed

The recommended process basically states that you capture, edit, create a video file, use the video file to burn to dvd.
Where possible try to keep all settings the same from capture through to burning, things will run much smoother and faster.

Are you creating a video file prior to burning?

After editing go to Share ‘create video file’.
You will have to use the custom option, selecting a bit rate of 4000 should compress your video below 4.7 (4.3) allowing it to fit to disc.

You then start a new project, change the project properties to match your clip, share create disc, add video.

Read the recommended procedure again.

Read My Quick guide to Avi and Mpeg capture, from the link below.

Thanks for your response. Yes, my clips were from a Canon DV camcorder and captured them in MPEG-2 format. With VS9.0 I edited the clips, added transitions, captions, and background music. The created VSP file is 2.9 GB large. Then I tried Share/Create Video file of the so created VSP file. No Chapters or Menu was selected. Everything went fine until 84% of the VSP had been rendered, then it won't go any farther. The incomplete rendered file xxxx.mpg is 5.16 GB. In other words, the rest of the VSP was not rendered. Then I tried to directly burn the same VSP file of 2.9 GB to disk (75 GB free, NTFS). Same result; only 84 % rendered. Finally, I tried to Fit to Burn the same 2.0 GB VSP file with the same result. When 84% was rendered, the program simply stopped and won't go any further.
The bit rate I used was 8000. The only thing that I did not follow was the Recommendation for Burning DVD was the Media Type: I did not push the slider to 100% (step 7 under Burn DVD Phase). It stayed at 70. I did not change it because in the VS9.0 manual under "Speed/Quality" it says that moving the slider completely to the right produces a higher quality video but at the expense of fluid motion of the video. When I installed VS9.0 the slider was already at 70.
I hope this will clarify what I did. Thanks

Incomplete rendering

Hi Trevor, I forgot to mention that I used "Same as Project Files".
After submitting this reply, I will open the link you gave me. Thanks again.

Some clarifications:
1) Your Project file (*.vsp) is never very big because it contains only pointers to video files - not the video itself. So I do not understand what you think is 2.9GB, but I suspect that it is your captured video file, which should have the suffix (*.mpg). You should enable the windows explorer display of the file suffixs to see this for yourself.

2) When you SHARE/Create Video file, there is no opportunity to create "chapters or menus" so I think you must have inadvertently gotten in the burn sequence with your project still in the timeline - which is highly likely to result in the symptoms that you experience. Always create an mpg video file of your project (it will be about the same size as your captured video file) and then with New Project (empty timeline), Create Disk and slick Add Video to select your video file for burning.

3) Burning at 70% Quality setting is not a problem.

To jchunter:
Thanks for your comments. Indeed, I checked the .VSP file and it is 2.9 MB and not 2.9 GB.... Sorry about that.
Yes, the project was still in the Timeline when I either tried "Create Video File" or "Burn".

As I understood it, when you Create Disc, the Timeline needs to be empty. However, for "Create Video File", the project should be still in the Timeline?

The project needs to be in the timeline when you Create Video. You can set properties using "Same as Project", as long as you have set the project properties to match those of the captured video file.

When doing Create Disk, remember to set the burn properties using the tiny, insignificant, gear shaped icon hidden second to the right on the lower left of the window...

BTW, please report the bug in the update pack to Ulead Tech Support

Thanks, John. Your advises are really helpful. Yesterday I cut the .vsp file, that is 1 hr 59 min long, in 2 pieces, then Create Video File on each half separately. Finally Create Disk by "adding Video" each of the created video file .mpg, Fit to Burn. The program calculated a bit rate of 3500. The end result was fitted on one 4.7 GB disk. Upon playing the resulting DVD, the video is still better (clearer, sharper) than the DVD that I created in the past from an analog camcorder.

Again, thanks. I did send a query to VS Technical staff about the problem I had with the update pack but to date received no response.
