DVD/BR printing

I selected this forum, maybe some of you are still printing your discs.

I had for over 10 years the HP printer working under WXP. It was an excellent device, but it is not supported under W7.
So I was looking for a new printer and too my big surprise there are almost no printers on the market to print direct the DVDs/BRs.
Finally I selected the Canon IP7200 printer, the only one what was available in our shop.
Unfortunately it was a big mistake. This printer is a nightmare, slow, eating the inks ( today just for cleaning it eat up one ink!!!). Also the WIFI connection is a huge problem, while my HP printer is always on and available on each device in our house ( over 10), the IP7200 is sometimes on, sometimes not, simple dissapears from the WIFI network.
Additionally the supplied software is probably collecting more data from my computer as offering a fast and easy operation.
Now my printer is over 2 years old and I am hesitating about a replacement.
Any idea what to buy?

I'm not sure what drove your choice of putting this post in the Movie Factory forum. That forum attracts almost no users these days, so your post would be ignored. So I moved it to the general Forum Chat forum. Hopefully you will get more answers here.

It has been a long time since I printed labels onto my DVDs -- or indeed produced a DVD or BD disc. But I still have my sort of old Canon iP4800 which prints to disc. I have to say it worked well, and probably still does. While its use of ink is heavy, it sounds as though your more recent printer uses far more. Mind you, I suppose you realize that the set of ink tanks that come with a new printer have in the past, at least, been less than half full. By the sounds of it, that could have been the case with yours. It's designed to get you to go out and buy more ink for a cost which is often higher than what you paid for the printer in the first place!

As I used to print a lot of discs and quite regularly, I solved the money problem by buying a device which has large ink tanks and sits outside the printer but is connected with tubes to bring the ink to the print head. And the bulk ink makes it a lot cheaper than regularly buying new small ink tanks that sit inside the printer. Setting it up can be slightly complicated, but once you have it working, its quality is excellent -- easily as good as the smaller, internal tanks. The devices are matched to specific printers, and I believe are available for both Canon and Epson printers. I am not doing a professional DVD/BR production, in the last time just few examples (give aways) of my films. this kind of work is even worse on the Canon printer, as it is not used for long weeks ( for general printing we use the HP printer what is much much reliable). Before every print session on Canon I have to spend long time up to hours (and some ink tanks) to make a single DVD print. Yesterday I wanted to print 10 discs, the preparation took over a hour and 4 discs were printed with missing ink. (The test print on paper was OK, but 5 minutes later on the disc 1 or 2 colors were missing again. (New cleaning session, 1 tank replacement etc).
Never again Canon!

I also used a continuous ink system for many a year, Epson 1400 was my last printer till that packed in.
Needing a printer in a hurry to print the church newsletter - we purchased a HP Office Jet, forgetting the disc print option was a mistake.
As new printer was supplied with 3 mm of ink, did not last long.
So a little near to home I used

That is correct, the originally supplied ink tanks have almost no ink ( enough maybe for 10 pages). The problem is that the printing heads on all recent printers are now the part of the printer, and they simple dry in when not in use for longer time. The manufacturers use to clean the heads with the ink, what is extremely material -ink- consuming and is very slow. On Canon it takes 10-15 minutes.
Even HP gave up the technology to integrate the printing heads into the ink tanks. This made a replacement cheaper but finaly it is more expensive, because of waste of ink.
For paperprinting I use also a laser printer what is more economical and much faster.

On top of that almost all manufacturers gave up the disc print option. This is available today only from Canon and from Brother - but this model is not available everywhere ( and is much bigger).
