Cant edit Mirillis Action videos. (VFR?)

Post by Rhopman1986 »

Hello,

I cant find really much info on this, but I am having problems editing videos which I did record on Mirillis Action!

The recording and playback is 100% fine on Windows, MPC, VLC, etc.
But when I add the videos in my time line, and try to play them, or render the video, Corel Video Shuts itself down with no error or something. It just shuts down.

I was really wondering for a long time why Corel Video Studio could not handle this, since with Nvidia Shadowplay I never had any problems, but after some research, I think the VFR recording by Action! is causing this.

Can anyone confirm this? and what can I do about this? Because I of course need to edit the video files :/

Edit:
The problem occurs on all export formats from Action!. So: MP4, AVI, Nvidia HVEC Codec, no Codec. Does not matter.

Hi Rhopman

Can you give more details regarding your video files.
Are they Mpeg4 types.
I assume Mirillis Action is screen capture software, not sure if problems using Mpeg4 are the same.

Please read this recent post
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=64331&p=361431#p361431
and if that seems to fit your issue I can you report the problem to Corel Support.

as a work-round try setting the project properties to use a higher frame size 4K may help?

Are you able to provide a sample video so we can test your clips.

Hello,

Thanks for your answer.

It are all fresh screen recordings, it does not matter if I export it in AVI, MP4, with help of Nvidia EEVC, everytime I add a track to the timeline and try to play or export it as a project, Videostudio crashes.
If I record with Nvidia Shadowplay, everything is fine.

I have recorded a new part with a couple of seconds for testing. Again in Windows, MPC, VLC, the playback is perfect. Only Corel Video Studio is not able to handle the files it seems.

I can insert your sample clip into the VS library window and also into the timeline of VS 2018. However, it shows as completely black. It plays in the timeline, but with no video -- only audio. When dragging it into the timeline, I get the message that "the contents... are unreadable". And as will be seen from the attached image of the Properties box, while telling me it is Microsoft AVI, it tells me the Compression is "Not Accessible". This suggests to me that VS doesn't have access to the exact codec used.

MediaInfo provides the following:
General
Complete name : C:\Users\sisyp\Videos\Action 20-9-2018 20-49-43.avi
Format : AVI
Format/Info : Audio Video Interleave
File size : 73.9 MiB
Duration : 37 s 830 ms
Overall bit rate : 16.4 Mb/s

Video
ID : 0
Format : FICV
Codec ID : FICV
Duration : 37 s 817 ms
Bit rate : 13.2 Mb/s
Width : 2 560 pixels
Height : 1 440 pixels
Display aspect ratio : 16:9
Frame rate : 60.000 FPS
Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.060
Stream size : 59.6 MiB (81%)
And VLC player tells me the FICV codec (which I had never heard of before) is specific to Mirillis -- which again brings me back to wondering whether VS can access, or work with, that codec.

Interestingly enough as well, Windows File Manager does not show an image for your clip -- just the VLC icon (which is what I have it set for as my default player). This tends to suggest to me that Windows itself has difficulty identifying the exact nature of the video. It only does this for a couple of other problem clips I have in my collection which also play black but with audio (though not using a Mirillis codec).

Can we assume that Mirillis Action cannot be set to record video in another format i.e. using a non-specific Mirillis codec?

Hello all,

Sorry for the late replies, but I want to thank everybody for their help.
Eventually it had nothing to do with VFR/CFR or anything like that, but because of the sound quality. The maximum sound quality did let Corel Video studio crash, so when I did change the recording sound quality to 24 bits /48khz, everything works fine! Perhaps this can help other users as well who experience the same issues.
