It has been 4 years or more since I used VSX5 to create DVDs from home videos. I've changed PCs and never installed VSX5 on the current PC. I have my .mpg, .upd, and .VSP files from the VSX5 projects on an external hard drive. I may do some more video work soon and may want to go back and edit some of my VSX5 videos, so I'm thinking about purchasing VS 2018. If I purchase VS 2018, can I use the old VSX5 project files in order to edit those videos? Would it be easier and/or smarter to import the VSX5 .mpg files into VS 2018 and start new projects? Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: VSX5 and VS 2018 Questions
Hi Gary
Video Studio X5 is quite old and as such Corel may be giving you a good discount, maybe 80%, the offer only shows through the program
I would advise that you install X5 just to take advantage of that offer.
Installing X5 and 2018 should not be a problem.
Opening your VSP projects will require a relink.
Using X5 projects in 2018 would not normally cause any issues provided X5 was still installed, but any samples or effects used from X5 will not be available within 2018 especially as X5 was 32 bit and 2018 64 bit
If you do not install X5 to resurrect the VSP then you will best to start the projects again using 2018
Personally I would install X5

Re: VSX5 and VS 2018 Questions
If you have X5 installed, the objects and effects that you may have used for that version are available in the samples folder/sub-folders of the installed program. Even tho many are not now a part of 2018 samples, the sample items are uniquely numbered and ones from X5 can be inserted/relinked easily within a vsp running under 2018. Select an item to re-link, choose relink and navigate to/find the one(s) you want in that X5 samples folder, and it's sub-folder (eg decoration), select the one wanted and click Ok in the re-link panel. To help, the item name you want is displayed in the title bar of the re-link panel. Quite often VS will also auto re-link all re-linkable items that are in the same folder.
That's Ok for one or a few vsp's, but if you intend to do this more often, then separately save the X5 samples folders somewhere NOT in the application installed location, and then you can use them whenever you want, even tho you may un-install that X5 version at some future time. I find I am frequently doing this for pointing fingers - 2 in the X5 pack, but removed from X7 onwards. Ditto for several types of frame. Because I have had all versions from X5 onwards installed at one time or another, even though they are not all installed now, I have a folder where the sample folders from each version is saved, with version (eg, samples/X5, samples/X6 et seq) they relate to.

Re: VSX5 and VS 2018 Questions
Lata and Davidk,
Thanks for your quick responses and information. I have located my VSX5 installation files, VSProX5_SP1.exe, VSProX5_SP2.exe, VSX5_Pro_PF.exe, and VSX5_Pro_TBYB.exe. I believe the TBYB file was for the trial. Because the VSX5_Pro_PF.exe is the largest file in order to reinstall VSX5 I plan to use the files in the following order: Pro_PF, SP1, then SP2. If the reinstallation process should be done differently, please let me know.

Re: VSX5 and VS 2018 Questions
Hi Gary
I would install the program then let the service packs install automatically, you should be prompted to update.
If you do not see a pop up advertising 2018 the view the messages, maybe via help.

Re: VSX5 and VS 2018 Questions
Hi Lata,
I have installed VSX5 and the service packs. I had to manually install the service packs, as there was no prompt for them and checking for updates said there were no updates. After installing VSX5 without the service packs I started it to make sure it would start. I received the Corel Guide window, which offered VSX7 for free. There were no messages or other offers at that time. I wasn't able to install the service packs until 3 hours later, and after they were installed Corel Guide had a message that offered VS 2018 at a 75% discount. Thanks for making me aware of the discount. Now I have to refresh my brain cells to remember what how I used VS. I still have a book for VSX5, and I believe I created some Word docs concerning my processes. I'll probably review the VS 2018 video tutorials to get up to date with VS 2018.
Thanks again to you and Davidk for your help.

Re: VSX5 and VS 2018 Questions
That printed copy of the user guide you got with X5 was the last time a user guide came in printed form. Every version thereafter - the guide was 'soft' - download, save, and read with adobe reader.
And you will note that the guide explains what the various controls do, but nothing about how to use them.

Re: VSX5 and VS 2018 Questions
Davidk,
Sorry I should have provided more info about the book. It wasn't the user guide. The title of the book is "Picture Yourself Making Creative Movies with Corel VideoStudio Pro X5" by Marc Bech. It was 353 pages, and there were example files to download that were used in the various lessons. It was extremely helpful to me.
