Why Can't PSP 2019 64-bit do this?

Post by jimrx4 »

Been using PSP 2019 for the last couple of weeks. Perhaps someone can tell me why the PSP 64-bit can't scan/doesn't recognize Canon Lide 220 scanner? Also can someone please tell me why if I'm using PSP 2019 64-Bit I can't print a photo but have to close the 64-Bit and then load the 32-Bit and print from there? Scanning sorta works in the 32-bit program - however when I did scan an item the scanning screen closed immediately after and the whole program crashed immediately after that! I think when there's an update they're going to have to redo both programs. So far it's a pain.

How are you trying to initiate the scan? Are you clicking on the scan icon in the top left of screen? Or are you going to File > Import and then choosing "From Scanner or Camera" or are you instead using "TWAIN Acquire"?

If you are trying to use the TWAIN option, then it is highly likely that your Canon Lide 220 scanner TWAIN driver is 32 bit only, and won't work in the 64 bit version of PSP. I have two Canon scanners and one Brother MFC. The latter is supposed to have a 64 bit TWAIN driver, though I have never succeeded in having successive 64 bit PSP versions recognize it. The Canon scanners are old and only have 32 bit TWAIN drivers. In other words, if I want to use TWAIN, I have to scan in the 32 bit version of PSP.

However, with all of my scanners I find Import > From Scanner or Camera works quite well in 64 bit PSP -- though the interface is not as sophisticated as the full TWAIN interface.

I don't know if you have Canon scanware software installed. I use Canonscan Toolbox version 4.9 which works well with both my Canon scanners. It can be set to link two scan buttons on it to two different graphics program. I have one linked to PSP 2019, and the other to an old version of Photoshop -- though I have it linked to the 32 bit version of PSP. I click on the relevant button and it in effects begins the TWAIN process, then sends the scanned image to PSP x32, which it opens for you.

I might note that few scanners have 64 bit TWAIN drivers -- I'm not really sure why. Similarly a lot of filters, particularly older ones, only come in 32 bit versions. These are two of the major reasons that the recommended installation of PSP is to install both the 32 and 64 bit versions of the program.

From memory twain was only ever meant to be 32bit. MS then changed it to, iirc, 'image acquire' for 64 bit.

I use 64 bit PSP almost exclusively.

I occasionally need to scan documents and most often save as PDF files. I have a cheap HP printer/scanner/copier and any time I want to scan I go into the HP software options in the menu, and select scan. If I scan and save as jpg I can then open in PSP - no fuss. I had never tried PSP scanning function until now, prompted by this post and it worked without a problem. From what I saw the direct scan with HP software provides more options. So I can't help you with that problem.

Regarding printing, I use the File / Print Layout and that works as designed for me. If that does not work for your in the 64-bit version, try resetting - save your workspace and then reopen PSP while pressing the shift key. I hope that works.

Hi Ken,
I saw this post and thought I'd ask you directly. I have PSP 2019 and it will not scan from an HP Deskjet 2545 Ink Advantage All-in-One Printer that is supposed to work with either 32 or 64 bit. The printer is about a year old. The message I get is that the WIA device driver is missing when scanning from a scanner or camera. I checked in services.msc and the WIA is running. I stopped it and restarted it but that didn't help.

When I try using Twain Acquire it says no scanner found. I can print to the printer so it is only the Scan that is giving me problems. The scan ability was the main reason that I bought this program, so this is a real disappointment.

Thanks for any ideas or solutions you can suggest. I posted this as a separate question because I thought maybe I had to Define the Scanner to PSP 2019 but I've had no replies which surprised me. So I decided to keep looking through the posts.

Can we assume you have installed the software that (probably) came with the scanner, and updated it if an update is available?

Can we also assume that in Windows Control Panel you have gone to "Devices and Printers" and selected "Add a device" and have it search for your scanner?

I have an HP 64-bit laptop running Windows 10 Home version 1803. It has 12gb memory and 2tb hard drive.
I also have an HP Deskjet 2545 Ink Advantage All-in-One Printer. These hook into my Wireless Network and work well together.

I can print to this printer using Word 2013 AND can print and scan using MS Paint AND can Print from PaintShop Pro 2019.

But it will not Scan from PaintShop Pro 2019. This is my first attempt at scanning using this printer in Paintshop Pro 2019.

Yesterday, here are some things I did to resolve this before contacting you. I went to the HP website and it says that WIA Device Drivers are installed with their Basic Driver Package. But, just for the heck of it, I installed the Basic Driver Package again but nothing changed.

Then I installed their Full Feature Driver Package, just in case. But nothing changed. So this was updated, as of yesterday.
I included a screen shot showing Devices and Printers which shows my HP printer installed and set as a default. I noticed something with this printer that I don't know anything about. It says it is a Web Services Printer and I don't know what that means or if it would affect using it as a scanner in PSP.
Devices and Printers show HP Printer set as Default.JPG
Then I checked in services.msc and the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) was set to Automatic and was running. I stopped it and restarted it and rebooted but nothing changed.
I'm not very techie and I'm out of ideas. Thank you for responding. I hope you can help me.

Well you certainly seem to have done everything to make it work. I am interested, however, to note that the screenshot showing the scanner has "Scan only" on it (which you would think would make it work). But I would be interested to know what is said at the end after the "DO NO..." That is obviously "Do not" do something. But it could be relevant to the problem you are having... Can you click on it to see if the whole message appears?

Hi Ken,
Please bear with me. I may drown you in info but I figure too much is better than not enough.

Here is the screen print showing the full name of the printer. This is the name it was given when I went through the full feature install yesterday. I didn't change anything. I don't care what it's called as long as it works. :-)
Shows full name and info on HP Printer.JPG
The next few show info I found in the in the Set Preferences area from the screen shown above.
This one shows the General info on the printer.
Properties 01 Shows Printers General Info.JPG
This one shows the Sharing Drivers tab. I don't know if this is relevant or not.
Properties 02 Shows Sharing Drivers May not be relevant.JPG
This shows the Port where the printer is assigned.
Properties 03 Shows Port where the printer is assigned.JPG
I had two more prints but four is the maximum that I can attach.
The fifth one shows that All Applications have Print and Manage Document permissions.

And the sixth one shows that in Device Settings the printer memory is currently 32mb. The only other option is 16mb.

I hope some of this helps. Thanks, Carole (morlaine)

Having now looked up what a Web Services Printer is, I suspect that this could be the cause of your problem. Essentially it is a printer used for on-line connection to HP services offered (I think for a fee) to HP customers. I found a page showing how to turn that off, and I suspect once that is done it may revert to being a "normal" printer: https://support.hp.com/nz-en/document/c04808536

I thought for sure this idea would work. It sounded logical. When I followed the instructions in the URL you sent me, the Web Services tab was missing. I went through those settings and found one called Internet Printing Protocol which is Enabled. Would that be the same as Web Services? Should it be Disabled? I posted a question on the HP website telling them that their instructions for disabling Web Services would not work on my printer and asked for instructions for disabling it. I don't hold much hope.

Here are two screen prints showing what I see when I enter my printer's IP address.
This one shows the Web Services Tab is missing and I didn't find any reference to Web Services on any of the settings that I looked at.

This one shows the Internet Printing Protocol setting that I found.

We use a Brother MFC-J625DW for scanning and color printing. It shows up on my homenet separately as a multifunction device, a printer and a scanner. When it scans (at the MFC-J625DW) it gives you the option of saving to computer or saving to media. If I have a USB "thumb drive inserted, then that is the medium. But after a Win 10 update, I can now save scan files directly to my computer.

Like most "professional" scanners, this unit saves its scans as PDF files. I can open the first page in either 32-bit or 64-bit PSP, or open the whole file in a dedicated PDF reader. The Adobe reader is very slow since the last Win 10 update, so I use one from Nuance. This works very well for documents, which is most of what we are dealing with. The handwriting is scanned very nicely.

A long time ago we used WIA/TWAIN scanners. I thought that technology went away -- I have not seen TWAIN advertised in some time; since the move to 64-bit OS's, actually. I thought scanners now outputted in PDF, the first page of which can be read by 64-bit PSP. If OP's scanner outputs PDF's, perhaps this would be a good work-around.

Hi
I do own a HP 7510 Office Jet printer / Scanner
I have no problems in using this scanner via PSP 2019
Choosing File Import from Scanner or Camera I see a message Establishing Connection then I get a window asking to choose a device, 2 options
I select 7510 series (net) is the actual device connected via Wi-Fi
The other option appears to be Microsoft software, a Web Service Device, both work and scan the image

I have done nothing special to install the HP Printer / Scanner just a normal install a long time ago
The device works equally as well whether connect via wi-fi or wired
Morlaine your image showing the port tab WSD-96ae….. is ticked, The only difference I see is your image shows Scan Only as the description where as I see WSD Port.

Ken also mentioned the Scan Only?
The Do Not now appears to be Do Not Delete, I am not sure where those words came from?

When you install the HP drivers did you first uninstall the existing drivers even though it says DoNotDelete?

I would think you would have to remove the printer software first before updating to new drivers.

Another thought
Have you tried running PSP 2019 as Administrator
Right click the desktop icon for Run as Admin, then try to scan.

Yes, I deleted the printer in Devices and Printers and then installed the drivers. And when it finished, it was named as you see it.

Scan Only -HPDD5ECE (HP Deskjet 2540 series)-DO NOT DELETE It had the DO NOT DELETE at the end. I have no idea why.

Since then, while trying to solve the scanner issue, I deleted that device, again in Devices and Printers. I assumed (silly me?) that would uninstall the drivers or whatever else the needed to be installed, if it doesn't, then I don't know how to do that. Is there other software that I should remove, if so, how?

Then I installed their Basic drivers first and then their Full Feature set of drivers. And when it finished, the device was back, again with the DO NOT DELETE on the end. As I said, I don't care what they call it as long as it works.

Any other ideas? I'll try most anything once. :-)

Deleting an icon is not the same as uninstalling something. Is it possible to delete an icon in that space? Or must one uninstall to delete? Or, put another way, does one uninstall when deleting an icon?
