Multiple Interface Issues

Post by SeanK »

Video Studio 2018 is becoming completely unusable for me.
I am unable to open the Options Panel by double clicking on a clip in the timeline (I have added an effect).
I cannot scrub through a clip in the Preview window (clip highlighted). But I can scrub through the project (project highlighted).
I can scrub through the clip in Multi Trim view.
In a custom view, when I drag a file from the desktop to the timeline, the timeline disappears and leaves a black space on the display.
Now and then VideoStudio just shuts down.
Every day there is a new problem.
I already uninstalled and reinstalled but the problems came back.
Are there fixes to any of these?

Hi
Sorry you are having problems here

Please report these anomalies to Corel Support

I can only suggest that you reset the Custom options to Use F7, till Corel fix this.
We cannot remove the saved Custom 1 / 2 / 3 but can save them same as F7 Default settings
That should help with the Options panel etc.

Scrubbing the timeline, when we drag the timeline curser it automatically changes to project.
All previous versions are the same, clicking the timecode bar always switches to Project
We should be able to use the scrubber, the white bar below the preview screen to drag the curser in clip mode.

You said "In a custom view, when I drag a file from the desktop to the timeline, the timeline disappears and leaves a black space on the display."
I do not get any black, can you provide a Screen shot of the UI?
What type of clips are you using, do you get the same effect using the programs samples.

Thanks for your response.
I should be able to scrub in the preview panel as long as Clip is highlighted. But now it only works for low-res files (480).
I have seen suggested that problems arise when you have custom layouts, even if you don't use them. So I have already done a uninstall and reinstall deleting user settings. I am about to find out if that helps!

Hi
I am not having problems scrubbing the Clip from the library or the timelines
The only problem is the white scrubber length, its only the length of the preview screen so a long clip is tricky to scrub.
From the timelines we can expand the view making it easier to control
I have used MTS 1920 x 1080 x 25 fps and a few 4K samples.

Ok I dug out some other clips
One type using 50P H265 was difficult to scrub
Then using a high data rate gave problems:-
MPEG-4 Files
24 bits, 3840 x 2160, 29.97 fps
Frame-based
H.264 High Profile Video: 105600 Kbps, 16:9
48000 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
MPEG AAC Audio: 128 Kbps

So it maybe the type of video and the capabilities of my pc.

I am also testing the Custom options, but that does not seem to affect scrubbing.

Sean - what type of files are you working with, what are their properties

Thank you for intervening. This is what happened on my last attempt.

With .MP4's (1920x1080-60fps) I could not scrub in Preview\Clip unless Smart Proxy was off. I could scrub in the Timeline and even in the Multi-Trim panel. With Smart Proxy off, all scrubbers would work but slowly. Older .MTS files (1920x1080-30fps) worked in all panels. So it did seem related to only some formats.

Unfortunately I am just now unable to reproduce this behaviour - All panels are working OK. I will rteport further when it starts to break down again. I might try creating a custom layout and see if that breaks it.

Hi

A bit of a pain when things start working ok.
Interesting comment on the use of Smart Proxy, that would affect project playback, I do not think it has on Clip playback. I will test that.

If you set Custom 1 to a different layout then I start to have issues.
The problem seems to be launching Video Studio shows what appears to be the default view, yet go F6 UI Layout and Custom 1 is showing as being used.
Go Share then Edit and Custom 1 shows ok.
Somewhere amongst this mess the options panel does not open.

To temporary set things right, set Custom 1 to use F7 default view, may save on that re-install

I passed the details of this post to our Corel contacts who were able to replicate your findings.
Problem has been escalated, placed on a bug list?
With the exception of the black / missing timelines which we do not understand.

Thanks for referring that Trevor. I found very much the same thing - It opens in Default and then you can't switch using Ctrl+1 until you select the default layout first - Then it switches. The custom layout issue is quite an old one as far as I can gather. They should be working on it already.

Interesting thing I am noticing. I have a project with all but one of the clips .MP4 \ 1920x1080 \ 60fps. When I first add a clip to the timeline (usually by dragging from desktop\explorer) I can brush through it first time in the Preview Panel pretty well. But then when I repeat it becomes slower and slower. Eventually it gets to the point when it will only move when I release the mouse button, at which time it jumps to the new scrubber point. It still scrubs OK in the timeline or in Multi-Trim or with Project selected in the Preview Panel.

HOWEVER, one of the clips is MP4 \ 3820x2160 \ 30fps. This one works fine - with higher resoultion but lower frame rate.

So it works for 30fps but not 60fps. I do not want to drop to 30fps as these are action clips.

All this is with Smart Proxy and all hardware acceleration options ON. With Smart Proxy OFF, it all works as expected - but s l o w l y.

Hopefully this helps focus the issue.

Don't know if anyone is following this still but here is another clue..

I drag a new MP4-1920x1080-60fps file to the Timeline.
I can scrub through, once, in the Preview Panel quickly and smoothly. But if I try to scrub through again, it does not follow the pointer and will not move until I release the button.
So I open Smart Proxy File Manager and delete the proxy file.
Now I can scrub through one time again in Preview but not as quickly or smoothly as before. If I try to scrub through again it does not work.
If I delete the proxy file AND delete the file from the Timeline then re-load it, I can scrub through first time just as quickly and smoothly as when I first loaded the file. Of course it does not work for a second scrub.

What button are you releasing, I use exactly the same video as you, do not use Smart Proxy and the only issue I have is the scrubber hesitates for the first second then plays correctly

When I release the mouse button (with which I am dragging the scrubber) the clip jumps to the current scrubber position. It works fine with Smart Proxy OFF but it's just too slow - I have the sort of rig that needs that help.
