Quite often when I select the paint brush in 2018, absolutely nothing happens when I apply it. Opacity is 100%, Selections are cleared, and I am on the correct layer. What could be causing this? Do I have too many brushes installed? Is PSP unable to read all of them, so it just stops? Is there another setting that I need to check?
The Airbrush works fine.

Make sure the blend mode is set to normal. Also make sure there is no texture turned on in the materials palette.
Open your history palette and try drawing, what does it say?

Yes, texture is one of the things that I check as well - forgot to mention that in my post.
I'm not sure what you mean by:
Open your history palette and try drawing, what does it say?
I haven't been using the pen, so I haven't been drawing. The paint brush problem happens even if I open a new image with no history.

Re: Troubleshooting the Paint Brush
Also try resetting the paintbrush to its default settings . Click the presets (to the left of the drop down where you choose which brush)and on its right hand side second buton down - Reset to default, but if you have a texture chosen you must untick this yourself.
(This should be included in a reset to default for the paint brush. perhaps to go on wish list for 2020)

Re: Troubleshooting the Paint Brush
Every action you make is recorded in the history pallet. The pen tool is vectors. I don't consider that drawing. You can draw with a paint brush. Just try using the paint brush. Does the History palette show that you called PAint Brush or does it say something like "preparing for tool"

Re: Troubleshooting the Paint Brush
Thank you! I knew there had to be a return default setting someplace.
(History shows Paint Brush, by the way.) Setting to default seems to have helped. Whew!
Now I need to find my forum posts about grids. I've been fighting with those today as well. Finally pulled out PSP 7 and 8 hardcopy reference guides. I don't remember having this much trouble with those old versions, but I was creating different types of things in those days.
Many thanks for today's help.
