My old computer died, but I saved my VS8 project on a thumb drive. I think I used Smart Package but I'm not certain. I found the file on the new computer with VS installed. There is two copies of the project, a MP4 and a VSP. They do play, with music too, on the VS view screen, but I want to do some editing.
Problem: I can't get the individual clips to show in Storyboard View. It's just one square with the total time of the project printed near the bottom (6 min 30 sec) with a yellow border and another square following: "Drag video clips here."
The Timeline View is solid green with an orange border (fit project in Timeline window)
What can I do to get the individual clips to show?
Thanks very much, as always!!
Bill

It seems that you have added the mp4 file to your project on the new computer. That mp4 files is the rendered video of your project and will no longer show the individual clips of your project.
The VSP file on the other hand is just a list of all the sources/edits that make up your project. It contains no video at all but can be used to load your project with all the clips. Of course this will only work if you also saved all those clips on your thumb drive. If your saved to a Smart Package then everything should be there.

Re: Can't get Storyboard to work
Without adding the mp4 to the storyboard or timeline, what happens if you go to File > Open Project and open your .vsp file? You should get a message saying it cannot find the video clips in the project and that you should relink them. What happens if you then browse to your mp4 file and try to link the project to that? If it was the original video which formed the basis of your project, then you might get the edited bits back in the storyboard.
If not, then as canuck has already said, there is little that can be done since it appears the mp4 is more likely to be a rendered version of the project. If all your video in the project is on the dead computer and you didn't save it to some external USB drive, or it is no longer in the camera, your only option would be to start a new project with the existing mp4 and do further edits on that.
