VS 2018 crashing

Post by mikec »

I have been using VS for many years to create travelogues from photos and video clips. I have just moved to 2018 from V10.
Everything seems to work well once I got with the new features EXCEPT:-

Now when I am panning and zooming photos VS will crash to a black screen every few frames. CTRL-Alt_-Del is dead. Only recourse is to reboot and restart VS. Most times I can recover the file, but sometimes not - everything lost. Have tried saving after every frame; no help! Monitored free memory and see no problem, so likely not a memory leak. Does anyone have any idea what is going on?

Related question, I almost always use "Ease In" and have to set it for every frame. Is there a way to make is stick? Maybe a .cfg file somewhere?

Hi mikec
And welcome to the forums

Sorry you are having problems here, I have tried using the Pan & Zoom feature, no crash problems.
Incidentally updated since X10, So reacts a little differently.
By “every few frames” I assume you mean a different image?

The Ease-In option for me does not seem to have much effect?
I also see a rogue keyframe being placed to the left of the last keyframe, strangely does not seem to show if I choose the Ease-In option.
Other than that I do not have any problems.

If you set without choosing Ease-In do you still have issues.?
If you use the library sample images, do you still have problems, although I doubt there is a problem with your own images.

We can use Copy and Paste attributes to copy the P&Z to other clips, although that seems to work but does not copy the Ease-in selection. Hmm

You could try resetting the program by renaming the folder 21.0 to 21.0_old
C:\Users\Trevor\AppData\Roaming\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio Pro (x64)\21.0
A new 21.0 folder will be created when launching VS.

Otherwise you should try re-installing the entire program, unfortunately I do not know what else to suggest.
But if it does continue you should report this to Corel Support.

Hi

Found I had a mouse sending erratic signals. Got really excited. Changed mouse. Disappointment!

Without Ease-in, when I select the end point for the zoom (at end of frame) I also get a tag inserted about 1 second before the end of the frame time and this becomes the new start zoom time. You have to delete the rogue tag to get what you are aiming for. Very annoying. Hmmm!

Same issue with library images. It is not related to any of my images. I've checked back in X10. No issues.

When I finish my current project (maybe a week or so, it was a six week trip) I'll try your other suggestions, but not holding my breath.

Anyone else have similar problems?

Ok Tried renaming ----/21.0 No luck. Took four attempts to open VS. First time hung at splash screen. Second time hung at 'Welcome Whats New' screen. Third time hung trying to load the project .vsp file. Fourth time went all the way. But P&Z still crashing the system typically between 5 and 20 photos through P&Z.

Uninstalled all old versions of VS:- X2, 4, 5, 9 and 10. ( Still used to edit old projects since newer VS versions are NOT always backwards compatible.) Made no change in the problem.

Uninstalled VS 2018, used cleanup tool and reinstalled. Still no change.

I read other threads on the forum re this. Tried a number of promising ideas. No joy.

Currently installing VS 2018 on a dual processor 32 bit machine running Win7 to try my luck.

BTW. One crash occurred in the middle of the MS Tuesday update push. Disaster! Had to restore the machine from the daily Acronis image backups. Shouldn't happen, but it did.

Mikec

Have you selected the Hardware acceleration via preferences- Performance

If so can you deselect those options
Does that improve things?

A recent poster seemed to indicate deselecting those stopped crashes.

OK, I give up on the P&Z crashes in VS 2018

I have now run tests on:-
Win 10 64 bit, Win 10 32 bit, Win 7 32 bit
Single processor and dual processor machines.
Different machines, hardware, drivers etc.
Run with no other applications active.
Run as standard user and as administrator. Run in Safe mode
Hardware accelerator on and off.
Put my paging file on an unused disc and increased it to 50 Gbyte (just for fun)

End Result. P&Z always crashes sooner or later. All other functionality is perfect.
Clearly the P&Z module has been rewritten in VS 2018. I really like it: if only it was just more robust.

The crashes are total. DEAD machine!
Page fault, memory leak, non-reentrant code, stack overflow? Who knows.

I'm going back to X10. It's not perfect, but it works better, and I have work to do..

C'mon Corel. Get this sorted.

Mike C

BTW Trevor, remember P&Z does no image work. Just attaches metadata for later rendering.
