PSP 2019 trial follies

Post by ehume »

I suppose this is in nature a bug report.

I have lived with PSP for more than 25 years, and this is my first trouble (not a bad record). I did have some issues with yellow windows on PSP 2018, but that spontaneously fixed itself.

This time I had a perfectly functional installation of the PSP 2019 Trial version. I thought I would try the Ultimate, but it detected the preexisting PSP 2019 installation and would not install, so I uninstalled my first PSP 2019 Trial, carefully unchecking the box the would have deleted all my settings. Then I went to install the PSP 2019 Ultimate trial. The installer ran into a problem and did not install. So I tried again. Same results.

Then I tried reinstalling my non-Ultimate version of PSP 2019 trial. I got the same message. Mind you, this used to run just fine. Now it won't install.

Well, I am sure Corel will fix this. Meanwhile, I have functioning installations of PSP 2018 and PSP x9. I count myself lucky.
Had PS3, PSP3; Installed: PSP-4.12, 5.03, 6.02, 7.04 (liked it a lot & used it for years), 8.00, XI, x4.3.0.3, x6.2.0.20, x7.4.0.11, x8.3.0.13, x9.2.0.7; now using PSPx10 (PSP 2018; version 20.2.0.1 x64) on Win 10-64 b2004.

Well, I did one more thing: I restarted my computer. The PSP 2019 installed smoothly with all of my customizations intact. "Oh frabjous day! Caloo, calay!" So it wasn't a bug after all, but a missing message: we need to be told to restart our computers after uninstalling PSP. So I still have no issues.

This is something I learned many, many years - and computers - ago. While not essential for many programs, it pays to always restart your computer when you install any program, and to restart your computer when you uninstall any program. This applies to updates also (and my Windows updates ALWAYS say they need to restart to complete the procedure). Registries are finicky at the best of times, and installing/reinstalling programs almost always cause changes to registry entries, or NEED to cause changes to those entries. And often the "need" to change those entries can't happen without a restart.

That's another reason you usually get warnings, when installing, to close all open programs. You never know whether or not the program being installed might need access to a registry entry that is presently in use by some open program. I suspect some issues people have with PSP and other program installations is that they don't follow that instruction to close all open programs first. Or, as previously stated, they don't do restarts immediately after the installation, whether requested to or not.

So while it might be a slight inconvenience, I would suggest that people "just do it!"

If "just do it" means to restart, I'll take it to heart.

Yes, "just do it" means to do restarts every time you install a program, every time you uninstall a program, every time you update a program, and it means making sure all open programs are closed prior to installing a program or updating to a program. While perhaps inconvenient for a few minutes, it pays in the long run with by helping to ensure that you'll have few- if any - installation issues with those programs that really benefit from that short term inconvenience. :-)

The one thing that I've found over the years is that you rarely have to turn off your anti-virus software - assuming your anti-virus software is well behaved. Any decent anti-virus software will pop-up a notification or warning if it feels it has encountered issues with an installation, so that will let you know that you will have to temporarily suspend that anti-virus program to continue the installation. Just make sure that you're installing a legit copy of the program! :-)

What confuses me though is your need to try the PSP 2019 Trial and then the 2019 Ultimate Trial. You do realise that there is no difference in the PSP program just that the Ultimate version includes the extra programs - Painter Essentials, Photo Mirage, Pic to Painting and Athentech Perfectly Vlear.
Out of interest I went and looked at the two pages on the Corel site for the standard and ultimate versions of PSP 2019- guess what they both download the exact same installer judging from the download address.
The standard:
https://www.paintshoppro.com/en/product ... 1533873287
Hover your cursor over the Download Trial button and look at the address of teh installer.
Now the Ultimate version
https://www.paintshoppro.com/en/product ... 1533873287

All the same right? So you were wasting time and getting frustrated over an incorrect assumption.

Interestingly, while program is the same Corel has added the word "Ultimate" to both the titlebar and the splashscreen of PSP 2019 ultimate so you know what you bought. Doesn't change the program at all, but now instead of confusing people by the program not being called "Ultimate" when that's what they bought. Now it'll confused people as to why it is called "Ultimate" but there are no real differences. Same problem, just different way of getting there.

My trial of the Ultimate pack did not, alas, come with the extras. As to Why the PSP2019 trial, I promised myself to test new builds before I spent my money. As for why 2019, I notice that I have all the PSP's from x6. I used to skip generations. And I like the new UI flexibility: you can change the textsize of the main font. So why not go for 2019?
