Copy video when using iPhone files

Post by antpappa »

Hi,
I am new to Corel video editing software. I am using Corel VideoStudio 2018 on a new PC. I have downloaded 3 iPhone videos. They are in the normal .mov format. When I play the videos on my PC using Quicktime, they play very smooth with high quality. When I input them into Corel VideoStudio 2018 they heavily pixelate. I have a case open but am hoping this is an easy issue to resolve.

Thoughts?

Hi
And welcome to the forums.
You are not giving much detail regarding the files or your project?
We will probably ask the same questions that Corel Support will ask.

Are all three video samples from the same phone and are the same type of video?
You say downloaded, was that from the internet or from your phone.
If internet they could be poor quality as they are not the original files.

What are the properties of your video files? Right click a clip in Library or Timeline and choose properties what are they. ( you can create an image of that panel to attach to your post.)

When you add one of the clips to the top timeline do you receive a message to match the settings?
Your Project Settings should match the video being used.
Are you able to provide a sample, you would have to upload to a sharing site, Google drive etc. then provide e share link.

Thanks Trevor:
1. Same phone
2. Sent an email with each picture, and downloaded it into Corel.
3. The files I believe are fine. When they are downloaded to the PC and played on Quicktime, they look perfect.
4. The issue arises when the pictures are in Corel.
5. I looked at one of the files: MPEG4, H.264, 24 Bits 720x1280, 30.025 Frames per second, 10672 Kbps
I am interested in what you are thinking in the area of matching the project to the video.

What do I need to do in this area, and any other thoughts?

Hi
The timeline can only support a fixed frame rate, for pal that would be 25fps or 50P
For NTSC 30 fps or 60P

It is advisable that we match the project properties to our video file , so using a 30 fps video will fit to the timeline.

Some phone video uses a variable rate, as your frame rate indicates 30.025 would indicate being variable, this can cause some quality problems for video editors. As VS is accepting the video files than that is at least on the plus side.

Using 2018 --- F6 Preferences – Show messages when inserting first video… should be selected
Start a new project to test this option as it has to be the first video.
This prompts us to match our video files properties, allowing the timeline to use the correct settings.
If that message does not show then you should Edit the Settings - Project Properties as near to your video settings as possible.
You indicate using 720 x 1280, that would be portrait mode, it would be best to rotate the phone to take / record in landscape, horizontal, as that would match the shape of your TV. 1280 x 720 and PC monitor.

2018 has added portrait options to its templates so users can edit in this ratio.
Settings – Project Properties – Mobile—choose -- MPEG-4 AVC (720 x 1280, 30p, 4Mbps)
MPEG-4 Files
24 bits, 720 x 1280, 30 fps
Frame-based
H.264 High Profile Video: 4000 Kbps, 9:16
44100 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
MPEG AAC Audio: 128 Kbps

If your project properties are set differently then your video will be stretched to fit the screen and will look pixilated.

Hi thanks for the help and I tired these suggestions with no luck. Installed another product, was up and running, with high quality. Kind of got frustrated with the lack of support from Corel's Tech line.

A product called Fimora, amazingly easy to use. My take is Corel may have more features, for the more advanced user. What got me to switch was really the technical support. Got someone from India, who kept on having to go to second level support. When I asked if I could just talk to that person, he said they can only email. So even their technical support can not get help. I provided some feedback saying the support group should have something like Webex so they could see what the user was facing. Kind of a shame seems like a pretty good product.

I will agree with you antpappa, Filmora has it's limits but for all its ease of use and contemporary "video look" it is better than VS for snappy works.
