Wacom Tablet

Post by ss-kalm »

I've just purchased a Wacom Intuos Photo tablet which came bundled with PaintShop Pro X8 - or the way I saw it when I decided to buy it, was more like buying PaintShop Pro X8 which comes with a free graphic tablet, which I wanted to try sometime anyway.

Having installed everything, I was disappointed to find out that the version of PaintShop Pro X8 that I've acquired is somewhat crippled. I found out that there are 3 service packs, and tried to install them - apparently that's not possible. Trading emails with Corel Support it transpires that OEM and Bundled versions CANNOT be upgraded. I didn't really consider that installing service packs was an upgrade, and now I feel slightly let down. Anyone else?

Anyway, I'm now trying to learn how to use it, so I'll probably spend quite a bit of time on the forum - I may not post much, but hopefully I'll be reading and learning.

It's nice to be here.

What is your PSP X8 build number? (see under Help / About...)
You have perhaps the latest version and don't need to install the service packs.

The version is 18.0.0.120 x64, and I have been told directly by Corel Support

"I see that your PaintShop Pro is a bundled version. This explains why the updates can't be installed. The updates don't work with OEM/bundled versions."

I don't like that, it's a really low marketing idea, and I understood that the item I bought came bundled with PaintShop Pro X8, not an ALMOST PaintShop Pro X8. I really don't understand the mentality of actually going to the trouble of deliberately crippling it!

It's not likely that anyone will think ... "Well I've only got a working 99% of the program, I'll get $79.99 out of my pocket and buy the other 1%" ... Now, I'm just a little bitter, and may NOT bother purchasing an update because of it. REALLY REALLY STUPID marketing decision.

Some of the responsibility lies with Wacom for bundling a limited version of the software and not telling customers.

To be fair, Wacom not only didn't DO the crippling, but probably were not even aware it had been crippled.

Isn't most software distributed with a device a trial, express, or lite edition? Not all, obviously, but I have never received a full software package with a tablet. I will admit that the whole can't update because it is an OEM or bundled software makes no sense. Not offering upgrade pricing maybe. But not letting you apply patches is just weird.

Anyway, my point being that wacom most likely does know that it's not a full version of PSP. Part of the agreement they had to reach with the company to offer PSP in a bundle.

This is typically how it's advertised ... as I said I actually bought the tablet for the Paintshop Pro X8 plus a tablet.

"A whole studio in one package:
Intuos Photo comes with Corel PaintShop Pro X8 for Windows and Corel Aftershot Pro 2* for Windows and Mac. Macphun Creative Kit* (Tonality Pro, Intensify Pro, Snapheal Pro, Noiseless Pro) is also available for Mac users. Everything you need to edit and transform your images into true works of art."

There is a difference between "updates" and Service packs or Fixes.
What Corel calls an "update" is a new version with an "update" price (lower price). "Update" are never free. Your version is not eligible for an "update" price. If you want an "update", this means you will receive the next version at full price.

Service packs or Fixes (bugs corrections) are free but only available for specific versions.

Correct me if I'm wrong...

Jean-Luc hit it "updates" vs. service packs. Here is link to PSPX8 Service Packs which should install- you only need the most recent, #3 as they are cumulative. No reason the service pack should not install- only do the most recent, close program first, run the file you downloaded.

I'm using PSP X8 with all the patches. I originally bought it before any of the Service packs were available & it was not a crippled product. The Service packs only fixed certain things that were needed to work better - not add any new features - if I remember correctly. So, again, the original version of X8 is not a crippled product - It's what we all bought & paid good money for before the Service packs were available.

I would suggest using PSP X8 as is for awhile to see if it fits your needs before "throwing the baby out with the wash".

Service Packs, Patches, and Updates are all the same thing. Upgrades are new versions of PSP. You get "upgrade" pricing. But when you "check for updates" you get service packs.

Also TimW they are not saying X8 is crippled, but rather that a Bundled/OEM version of X8 they got with Wacom won't accept the patches. And Corel support told them that it can't accept updates. Suggesting that a bundled/OEM version of PSP is crippled by not being allowed to be updated with patches/service packs.

Again updates do not equal upgrades.

I misspoke earlier, I didn't mean upgraded. I have no intention of trying to get upgrade pricing. I meant updated as in installing service packs. There's no reason why ANY product should be prevented from installing service packs, and what I meant by crippled was physically prevented from installing service packs which are invariably to fix issues arising from software being used in many unexpected ways by the general populous. NOT I hasten to add (as Tim stated) for adding new features.

No, this started because I asked Corel support how to install the SERVICE PACKS and was told (as I said earlier) ... "I see that your PaintShop Pro is a bundled version. This explains why the updates can't be installed. The updates don't work with OEM/bundled versions." ... This was as a direct result of trying to install service packs - NOTHING else.

I haven't given up on PSPX8 in fact I'm quite enjoying playing with it, however, I'm finding it difficult to get my head around some of the ways it works. For instance it's taken me a week to realise that you can't move individual items on a layer, only the layer itself ... or at least that's how it seems to work. My standard "GO TO" graphic application ... Xara Photo & Graphic Designer works entirely differently, and I have to have a completely different mindset to achieve anything. However, It's a learning curve. Hopefully I'll get there in the end.

LeviFiction Yes, ss-kalm complained of it being crippled in their 2nd post & 3rd post too.
