I THINK I SOLVED IT ! I'd like to thank everyone who helped me and kept me from punching out my computer screen. The solution appears to be moving the trim markers to the beginning of your project in time line so that there is an orange line over the entire project in timeline.Lata's web page was particularly helpful.
This problem might have been one of those things that people do automatically when they edit--moving the time markers to a far corner-- and the significance of the orange line becomes unnoticed by them. Please believe me, I put in a lot of time trying to solve these issues before I ask for help. Thanks particularly to Trevor for his thorough-going help---I've learned a better way to cut on timeline from him and others.

Still sane in Massachusetts

Yesterday I posted two thank you notes for the help you gave me solving this problem, but I don't see the posts posted so I'm thanking everyone again. The solution is to keep the trim markers all the way to the beginning of your project so that an orange line is created above the time line. Any editing done under the orange line will not have the clip-jumping problem that caused me so much trouble.

Thanks everyone again.
