Clip madness
Hi,
I have video studio pro x10
I'm having a problem playing clips in the story board. I click on a clip in story board and a yellow frame surrounds it. I click the play button and nothing happens. I un-select the clip and press play and the cursor, or whatever you call it, goes to a clip either 2 or three clips to the rear of the clip I want to play or two or three forward. It then plays just fine.
Also, is there some way in timeline of trimming clips without having to use those exceedingly annoying scrubber things? If it's something easy, I apologize; I'm spending hours trying to figure things out on my own using the manual.
Thank you,
Al Marotta

Not sure if this is what you mean, but I trim clips from the timeline, by using shortcut "s".Also, is there some way in timeline of trimming clips without having to use those exceedingly annoying scrubber things? First I make sure the Video "play head" (not sure if this is the proper term) is in the right position. This is done by watching and pause at the proper position. If I require fine tuning, I either manually change the time by a second or two or use shortcuts D/F to jump one frame forward/back.
I did adress/ask this here:

Re: Clip madness
You have selected a clip (thus the yellow orange bounding box) - now be sure to click the rewind (return to beginning) button, that's the one just to the right of the Play button. Now the Play button will play the clip from its beginning.Al Marotta wrote: I click on a clip in story board and a yellow frame surrounds it. I click the play button and nothing happens.
Correct if the timeline marker was at the end of your selected clip when you deselect it. See above.Al Marotta wrote: I un-select the clip and press play and the cursor, or whatever you call it, goes to a clip either 2 or three clips to the rear of the clip I want to play or two or three forward. Re: Clip madness
I'd like to thank worst cases and gewb for responding. I hit that link that WORST CASES offered and FINALLY learned how to move frame-by-frame. But I'm still having a problem with playback in storyboard. I hit that rewind button that gewb suggested and that did not solve the problem. I still get no play when I select a clip and still the cursor goes elsewhere when I deselect a clip and hit play (it goes to some far off clip I have no intention of viewing). There's no rhyme or reason to it--sometimes it goes to a clip behind, sometimes forward. These unselected clips do play. Does the position of the scrubber bars have anything to do with this?
Could someone also tell me for the love of Mike when you trim a clip, especially in the middle of a clip, chopping a segment of out of it, how do you identify where the trimmed clip is on story board and the parts of the clip that come before your clipped segment and the parts that follow?
Thanks.

Re: Clip madness
Why are you so intent on using the storyboard view - I hate it for editing - why not use the timeline
and I find trimming and cutting much easier doing it like this - - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQeANCK9UXg

Re: Clip madness
I think i am a little concerned with this comment, clearly the cursor should remain in position when hitting the play button.Al Marotta wrote: I still get no play when I select a clip and still the cursor goes elsewhere when I deselect a clip and hit play (it goes to some far off clip I have no intention of viewing). It may be your understanding of what the program can do, but i think we need to address this action.
Locating the section that is to be removed by cutting with the scissors.
whether in Story board or Timeline view when we cut a clip the sections can be seen, indicated by the white bar below the preview screen
Try this
add one video clip from the library to the top timeline.
The white bar shows in full
position the cursor somewhere in the middle of the clip and press "S" on the keyboard, same as hitting the scissors.
The clip will be cut into two portions.
select each portion and view the white bar.
Now cut the second clip a second after the beginning
You now have three clips, again select each in turn viewing the white bar.
As Brian mentions you may be best working in Timeline view where you can view more of the frames.
Go to F6 Preferences and change the Clip Display Mode to Thumbnail Only, will now view the frames rather than the name.
But as i say i am concerned with the actual playback that you seem to be having.
Can you run a test using the library samples to see if you have the same issues?

Re: Clip madness
I'm with Brian.
First I need to understand your terminaology - are you in the Storyboard view trying to do Timeline edits? If so, you are using the wrong tool for the job. If that is what you are trying to use, let us know and we can steer you in the right direction and offer a couple different approaches (the Single Clip Trim is a great little tool).

Re: Clip madness
This is for Trevor.
No success with your method, but maybe I am misunderstanding something. I had a clip in timeline. I used S to split it into clip B It worked wonderfully. Further to the right I split clip B again and created clip c. Then I moved whatever you call the moveable vertical line that moves when you play timeline to clip A and clicked on it. Then I hit play and had the same problem I had with storyboard: Instead of playing clip A from where I had place the "Moving Line" and on to clips B and C, the moveable vertical line jumped to the next unrelated clip I had in timeline.
I don't not know what you mean by "White line". The only whiteline I see on my screen is the one that changes when you move the scrubber thing and the two triangular little things beneath it.
Please let me hear more from you. Thank you,
Al Marotta

Re: Clip madness
Hi All,
I think I may have stumbled onto a partial solution. When I try editing in timeline in a section of it where there is a long yellow bar that follows parallel to timeline, I do not have the problem playing back clips. I do have this problem (of skipping to the next segment of clips) when I edit without the yellow bar. Could someone please tell me more about the yellow line (it's not the yellow frame you get when you select)? The yellow line begins mysteriously after some time in time line and just as mysteriously ends.
Thanks,
Al Marotta

Re: Clip madness
Hi
I think you may have set the Preview Range, that shows as an orange / yellow line at the top of the timeline.
You need to reset that line
View this web page, second image down.

also read the help files

Re: Clip madness
Yes that is the white line I am referring to, in future I will refer to that as the “Scrubber” as does the help file below.Al Marotta wrote:This is for Trevor.

Using the Scrubber to select and cut / remove frames is very similar to Single Clip Trim mentioned by gewb, although I believe we access that via the library,
We can also Cut and trim clips directly from the timelines using Scissors (S) and delete, in addition to using the Scrubber controls, the clock being very useful to set the curser accuracy to one frame.
The Scrubber can be used from the Storyboard or Timeline View.
It is really a combination of both approaches that you need to familiarise yourself with, choosing which is suitable for you.
Ok to remove 3 seconds from the beginning of your clip
Option 1
1 / with the clip selected, position the cursor at 3 seconds, use the digital clock for accuracy, Press “For D” to nudge frame by frame
2 / Press F3 or the first square bracket will remove the 3 seconds
Or
Option 2
1 / with the clip selected, position the cursor at 3 seconds, use the digital clock for accuracy, Press “F or D” to nudge frame by frame
2 / select the Scissors or keyboard “s” to split clip, that will create two clips
3 / select the 3 second clip, and delete
If we want to remove frames from the middle
1 / position cursor in the middle, preferably at the beginning of the section you wish to remove
2 / Scissors to cut, creates two clips
3 / now treat the two clips to remove end frames as above, option 1 or 2..
We can use the timeline or Scrubber to position the cursor, or a combination of both
Then it’s a matter of cut and remove.
