Exporting from VS to USB or externaldrive

Post by Al Marotta »

I use VSX10. I'm trying to edit material shot at a local cable access studio and I want after editing it to be able to cable cast the finished product over the studio's system. That means either handing the studio a thumb drive or using something like Drop box (please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the material would lose quality if I made a disk out of it, something I had been doing for years with iMovie on Imac and something I actually prefer, since it's easier to mail shows to people.)The material was uploaded into VS as an mp4 file. Without knowing what the F. I was doing, I chose the "smart rendering" option VS gave me. Was that the right thing to do? But that's not what I am writing about. What I would like is someone to tell me in as much detail as they care to (I've looked at the instruction manual and I don't expect someone to hold my hand but the manual ain't helpful) how to go from an mp4 finished edited product to either a thumb drive, an external drive, or some program like Drop Box.
Can you also tell me IT AIN'T SO? That there is no fade in transition in VS 10X, just fade out?

Thanks,
Al Marotta

If you have the completed mp4 file on your system then simply copy that file to a USB or or other device. There is no "exporting" required anymore.
If you want to distribute your video to others ten the easiest method would be to upload the video file to Dropbox and give the people a link to it. This is a lot easier then making DVDs and mailing them.
Whether you lose quality when making a DVD depends on the quality of your source video. If your original source file was high quality mp4 then rendering to a DVD will produce video of lower quality

it's all mater of size.
render as mp4 will give you a file, you can place it on USD, burn it to DVD (if les than 4.5GB) or upload, if you got high upload service as it can take many hours.

asik's reference to the DVD option also includes simply using the DVD disc (or a Blu-Ray disc) for that matter as an archive for files, rather than converting it to DVD-compatible mpeg-2 and burning an actual video DVD. You wouldn't use VS for that. Just any other program dealing with 'burning' files to discs such as Nero, Roxio or the freeware ImgBurn.

As for fading in, I more often than not start my projects with a fade-in from black. That's quite easy. Simply insert a black image at the very start of the timeline, adjust its length to what you want, then add a crossfade into your title sequence or first clip. And you'll even find a black image (plus other colors) in the Graphic options (the little icon with the flower between T and FX to the left of the library window. They're in the first category "Color".

Thanks for all your help, although I still would like to know if when you import you want to use smart rendering or not.

Since it appears that all or most of your input video is mp4 and you are outputting to mp4, then using SmartRender will speed up output. SmartRender is designed to only render video which is either not the same format as the output format, or else video in a project which has been subject to editing e.g. had a filter applied to it. It ignores video of the same format as the output and otherwise unedited video, and this speeds up the overall rendering.

Note, however, that in the past some people have had problems with out of sync audio when using SmartRender. This was mainly with versions of VS older than X8, though one or two seem to be popping up even with more recent versions. In those cases, we advise to re-render with SmartRender disabled.
