Cloudy day filter

Post by okyou »

Hello,

I need to convert a sunny day photo into cloudy day. I can cut out the sky and change the sky into a cloudy sky, but the rest of the picture, land, bldg, and people still look sunny. I tried to adjust the brightness and contract but the result is not good. Is there any filter or/and tricks that can turn a bright sunny day into a cloudy and casting look ?
Appreciate for any information and help.

Take a look at Landscape Pro:
https://www.landscapepro.pics/
Not only does it allow you to replace skies but allows the overall lighting to match your new sky.
There is a free trial available which does everything but allow you to save the finished result 'though there's nothing to stop you doing a screen capture!
It is a standalone prgramme rather than a plugin but you can adapt a script to run it from within PSP.

Try desaturating your sky and sunny areas.

No matter what you do to a sunny day photo it will always show some signs of that sunny day. You can darken , desaturate, change color temperature, but you will still have sharp dark shadows from the sunny day. To get it looking better you woukld also need to operate on all shadows in the image and soften and blue those up a little to show a colder temperature.

Good Evening!

My trick for turning any day into a foggy day is to use cloud images. Download clouds with transparent backgrounds. Add them to your photograph on their own layers and then reduce the opacity until you get the desired effect. Or you could simply make large white squiggly lines on a transparent background, blur them and reduce the opacity.

The image on top is the original and compliments of https://www.maxpixel.net/Mammal-Grazing ... al-3463328. The top four layers for the image on the bottom are clouds with varying opacities.

I hope this is helpful.

I'm afraid that, to me, the result looks like a sunny day with mist/light fog dissipating in the sunlight.

Good Afternoon.

Thank-you for your comments and of course you are quite right. I spent about five minutes on this example. If it had been a genuine project, I would have taken the extra steps of reducing the opacity of the original image against a gray background and perhaps tinkered with the Fim and Filters Photo Effects.

Landscape Pro is from Anthropics. I don't have LP, but I do have Smart Photo Editor and I have been able to set that up as a PSP effects plug-in, although it's not officially supported by Anthropics. I did email them saying it could work and suggesting they officially support it for PSP but they responded they didn't want to get into having to support multiple products from different vendors.

The main thing to be aware of is that if you use the effects from PSP it will only work with the top-most visible layer. So what you need to do is Merge Visible to New Layer, Duplicate, then run the LP as a plug-in. When it comes back, only your Duplicate layer will be changed.

But, worst case scenario if you can't get it to work as a PSP plug-in is that it will still be fully functional as designed--you'll just have to save the PSP image in a format LP can read and write.

Back in the Rangefinder camera days, I had excellent results converting a bright sunny day into a dark midnight scene with an Alcoa filter  :D .

Hello,

I followed you link and able to turn a sunny sky into a overcast sky fairly close. However, in this link I can't figured how to 'Desaturate the brigh blue sky reflections' on objects (people, road surface, etc) so that the photo look like it is in overcast sky. Can any of you can explain how to desaturate the sunny sky reflections on the following overcast picture ?

Thanks
