Hello,
It may well be that this question has been answered but I'm new to Corel VideoStudio 2018 Ultimate, and fairly new to video editing. (Over the past eight months while studying at college, I've managed to get used to Premiere Pro, but can't afford it at home.)
There are several things I'm finding a bit tricky, but one of the main ones is how to name and store sub-clips logically in a library when you're editing a particular project. I know there's multi-trim and I've used it, but without managing to rename and save the clips. I find that the sub-clips are left on the main track and I can't put them anywhere else that's safe.
One of the other niggles is that I can't play with the clips on the main timeline/video track. With ripple on or off, they stick to each other like glue (which is fine in some circumstances, of course!). I see that you can manipulate clips much more easily on the overlay tracks but am I missing something obvious?
It would be great to get some help. I've tried the Help sections and the pdf manual, and I've asked Customer Support but feel a bit stumped.
Btw, I did find a brilliant answer here to the transitions problem (shortening clips unwantedly) and another helping with fade-ins, so thanks to mirmar8 and others for raising and solving those issues.
Making, naming and keeping sub-clips and then some!

Hi
And welcome to the forums
First the timelines—video studio does not allow any gaps on the top Video timeline.
If you remove a clip the gap will be filled as all clips will move left to fill the space.
It’s the way VS works.
When we add a clip to the timeline we are working with a virtual clip, for want of a better description, linked to the file on the hard drive, Editing is non destructive so cutting / deleting sections does not affect the file on the hard drive.
Cutting a clip into half results in two clips, no need to explain that, both are virtual clips retaining the original name, and that can sometimes confuse things, I guess we have got used to that.
Select the first clip and view the bar below the preview screen, that indicates the section within the full clip, if that makes sense?
Multi Trim and using the scissors does the same thing, cuts the clip into sections, multi trim removes the unwanted parts, using the scissors we can delete the unwanted parts.
The sub clips as you say, again are virtual clips, there is a means of rendering those to a new video file.
Select any cut clip, File – Save Trimmed Video, that renders the clip to a new video file, it is saved to the working folder, VS gives the new file a new similar name, a clip is placed in the library.?
That option is there but for general editing is not worth the effort, your sub – clips are safe where they are as part of the timeline, you save the project as a VSP, that saves your edits to be used later. And when you are done the project is rendered to a single file, from Share choosing your preferred out put settings.
Playback
There is two modes, Project and Clip mode, the words adjacent to the play button indicates.
In clip mode -- only the clip will play
In project mode the entire timeline will play, effectively playing all clips
