Corel's unique PSP version numbering system

Post by DaveG74 »

I became a Paint Shop Pro user during version 3's release by Jasc in 1993. Since then, I've probably upgraded almost ten times.

Since Corel took the PSP helm, the version numbering system changed quite noticeably a few times. I frequently get confused and forget what my Paint Shop Pro version is numbered. (I currently own Paint Shop Pro 2018.)

So I've been recently curious as to when the next version is coming out, searching Google occasionally only to realize, "Nope. The next one's not released yet." Then, on a recent search, Google turned up "Paint Shop Pro X9"! I was so thrilled until I realized that X9 was in 2016 (per Corel's "X" numbering system that ended last year.)

So, in other words, Jasc used a straight whole number system until Corel took over in '05. They released X and XI (Roman numerals), until 2007 which saw yet another change, this time adding the secondary numeral after the X (X2, X3, X4, etc.). As if X2 comes after XI. This is probably where I started getting confused, and eventually, I became dumber.

So I have to remember, "2018...2018...2018. The next version is 2019, not X9."
I just thought I'd share this interesting anecdote.

I suspect part of the decision to use 2018 instead of continuing with the X is that after a while, people are going to get confused with the roman numerals. Already, people will confuse 9 and X9. Furthermore, imagine what will be after X9? XX... and eventually... XXX. Not exactly what they would want! At least, that is my guess.
