So I was taking some video with my smartphone and about 30 seconds in I realized I was shooting in portrait and not in landscape. I did not have time to stop the recording and start again so I just rotated my phone to landscape, expecting it to automatically rotate the aspect. Well, it did not. I recorded a landscape video in portrait aspect. No problem right? NOT. I can rotate the video in VS easily, but it does not rotate the layout.
Here is a snapshot of the actual video without being rotated.
Here is what happens when I rotate it in VS
So, as you can clearly see, it rotates the video with in the layout, but the layout is still portrait. How do I rotate the layout?
how to rotate video layout in vs10?

Edit the project properties to use 16 - 9
1920 x 1080
Your image looks like using 1080 x 1920

How did you get a portrait layout in Videostudio ??
or is that a screen shot from your phone - then what happens when you rotate your phone to landscape - assuming you have 'auto rotate' enabled on your phone

Brian
Using VS 2018 we can set project properties to portrait by choosing 1080 x 1920
Show messages will also do that when seeing a video recorded in portrait mode.
I guess we will never educate people to rotate the phone to landscape

Well if the jungleexplorer has manually set a portrait mode preview window why would they be surprised when they get the image they have posted - if you have a landscape video then set the preview window to landscape

Trevor had the answer in the second post - use 16:9, drop your clip to the timeline then rotate 90 degrees (either direction). Your clip will now be full screen 16:9 but rotated 90 degrees (duh).

Re: how to rotate video layout in vs10?
Thanks for the replies. I fixed the problem using Lata's advice. It was the project properties that were messed up. I have VS set to ask me if I want to use the first video clip to set the project settings. I chose YES when I inserted the video clip, which changed the layout to a portrait style, because the first part of the video was recorded in portrait mode. I restarted the project and inserted a landscape oriented video first and set the project properties to that. That fixed the problem. Now I just need to figure out out to start with a video that is in portrait and somehow transition it to landscape. The main issue here is that even though the phone was rotated to the landscape position when recording, because I did not stop and restart the recording process when I rotated the phone, the phone continued to recorded in portrait, even though the physical position of the phone was in landscape. The video is of a rare event that I have never seen before in Texas. It is of a Texas Coach-whip snake climbing around a tree. Very cool to see. I will upload the video clip, so you can see what I am talking about and offer suggestions as to how to fix the video. here is a link to see it.
