Order of "Filters" applied

Post by bifer »

I have a whole vacation footage of my Panasonic LX100 when I used it first. By mistake I recorded in 4:3 at highest resolution instead of 4k at 16:9.
My footage is now 3504 pixel wide and 2336 pixel high. My plan is to change it back to 16:9 format by cutting off top and bottom and then scale up to 4k again. I know it will have some loss of sharpness etc. because of this. This alone would work, but I also want to use the Mercalli 2.0 Filter for deshake. Now my problem is that I would need the order:
1. Mercalli 2.0
2. cut off top and bottom

Unfortunately VS2018 when I want to use both "Filters" does the other order:
1. cut off top and bottom
2. Mercalli 2.0

This leads to the effect that espcially top and bottomw of my already cut render is effect to be filled with useless pixelinformation to fill in with the Mercalli 2.0 filter, instead of cutting off these filled up pixels. I know I could do 2 runs. first deshake and then cut, but somehow I believe I should be able to do it in 1 run ...

Any suggestinon how to force VS2018 to do a certain order of filters?

Hi

Viewing the filter list, to the right are two arrows to promote / demote the order.
Personally I would do in two runs, Mercalli first, then render to a new video file before changing the aspect to 16:9, Customise motion could be used to resize the frame from 4:3 to 16:9

The other option is to go with 4:3 placed on a 16:9 background
As background you could use the same video stretched to 16:9 with a blur applied.

The problem with Mercalli is applying further cuts to video will request a rescan, applying Mercalli and rendering will overcome that problem.

The 2 step approach doesn't work. It is impossible to export that size of 3504 x 2336 ...
So no de-shake in the first run and then resize. :-(
I can't choose the user defined picture size in the output configuration. It is not selectable.
Also output like the 1st clip doesn't work. Since the error message is German I wouldn't post more about the error message here.

Hi

This is what I would try
First start a new project, add one of your 4K HD videos to the timeline, that should activate the show messages, your project properties will match the video files properties.
Delete the file from the timeline
Now add your 3504 x 2336 video, an unusual size I know. (looks like 4:3 anamorphic)
Using Customise Motion to increase the frame size to fit the screen, you will lose some detail top and bottom, nudge the frame up or down for best results.
Right click keyframe 1 for copy and paste to all.
Play the project to view the result
From Share – Same as Project settings will / should render the project to a new 16:9 video.

If you require a different output you should first modify the project properties to match the render settings
You do not give any details of your video files, the max data rate used is 65Mb although we can force VS to use 100Mb

MPEG-4 AVC 4K or XAVC S MP4 4K

Right click both your video files (4:3 and the 16:9) and choose properties what are they?

I have the German program version installed. So some things of your instructions are difficult to find again.

My source file is this:
PAL (25 fps)
MPEG-4-Dateien
24 Bit, 3504 x 2336, 25 fps
Bild-basiert
H.264 High Profile-Video: 105600 kbps
48000 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
MPEG AAC-Audio: 128 kbps

I only got this 4:3 format by accident when the camera was new and I didn't realize that I mechanically changed it, because the Panasonic LX100 has a mechanical ring to change the format.

Anyway my bigges problem is that applying Mercalli after a resize puts this "blur" frame around my movie, while when I would be able to first apply the Mercalli I could cut off top and bottom while stretching the rest to fit to 16:9 This would remove all or most of this "blur frame" Mercalli produces from top and bottom. But I can't apply Mercalli because I can't export in the orginal size before applying the resize.

So the order of my work defines the quality of my output.

You might need to use stand alone Mercalli program to do the image stabilization. I don't know, however, if the stand alone Mercalli program (very expensive to buy) can handle your 4:3 video clip. Mercalli has a less expensive program, ProDrenalin, that also does image stabilization; I however, don't know if they handle your 4:3 video clip.

There are other stand alone options, but more difficult to use, but they are free. Virtualdub has several deshake filter options with lots of options and features. Again, this route would need lots of experimentation and I don't know how it handles a 4:3 video clip.

It depends how important doing this is for you. I wanted to highlight other options to achieve what you want.

Thanks for the responses so far.
Well it was supposed to be my first "4K" movies shot with my family and my 3/4 year old son back then.
I don't need to do it immediately, but sooner or later I want to do it. I found it an interesting Mercalli filter application-exercise with these clips.

;-)

I saw the Virtual Dub solution, but I find Virtual Dub quite complicated to use and I would need to transcode it into a format Virtual Dub can handle and later back to h.264 in an MP4 container.

I just processed a video clip that is 3:2 with VS2018 as follows. Inserted it into the timeline, VS asked me to change the Project Properties to this video and I agreed. I then cut front and ending portions of this video. Clicked Share, and selected to use Project Properties. VS2018 created a 3:2 ratio video with the same properties as my source video.

So, this tells me that you should be able to process your 4:3 video with VS2018 like I did. Before the Share step, do Mercalli to stabilize your video. Share the video to your same video format. Now load that created, stabilized video into VS2018 to do your 16:9 edits.
