Hi
It is not the newest VS but maybe somebody can help us. My son installed my old VS X6 ultimate on his W8.1 64bit laptop. The installation was smooth but the operation is not.
In the properties we cannot set the video format to HD, it is always SD (720x576) and the VS does not recognize the MTS HD video from JVC camera as a HD, it shows just in the SD size window with broad black frame on the HD workspace.
When we add some HD template on the time line it is immediatelly recognized in HD format (fills the preview window) and after the template the HD (MTS) video shows up also correctly. After that I can delete the entire HD template from the time line and the MTS video remains in HD.
Interestingly a saved picture from the HD video sometimes has the correct size 1920x1080 but often shows up in different sizes. I do not why.
Any idea what can be wrong?
Thank you!
Eugen

Hi Eugen
First by saved picture I assume you mean using Edit – Take a snapshot
This can be used in either Clip or Project playback, the words being highlighted adjacent to the play button
In clip mode it will use the original clip details using the file on the hard drive.
In Project mode it will use the project properties frame size saving an image as seen on the preview screen.
Each of these can be a different size and content depending on our settings.
Video Studio X6 is very old, the project properties can only be set for Mpeg2 and Avi, there are no options to set for HD.
However HD uses an aspect of 16:9
Our Project Settings should also use 16:9, then at least we can view the HD frame in full.
From Share we can choose HD settings to render our project.
Later versions of Video Studio can use HD settings for our projects
Matching our Project settings Video properties
In general this should be used and is the best option.
Go to Settings – Preferences (F6) – General tab
Make sure that Show Messages when inserting ……is selected
Start a new project and insert one of your MTS video files to the timeline
A message should show. ( not for X6)
You can choose Details to view the settings, the right hand panel showing your video properties.
Choose yes / ok to match the project properties.
All I can suggest is when using X6 make sure the project properties use 16 9 ratio.
Or upgrade to 2018, the program should give you a good deal, if not view the Corel Guide -- Messages

Re: VS X6 Format missmatch
Hi Trevor
Thank you for you kind reply. I really do not know what is the problem there. I was using the VS X6 for years and only for HD projects ( under W7) I never had such problems as my son has now on W8.1.
Anyway we find some workaround with the original Corel HD templates. When such template is placed on the timeline, it switches immediately for HD (1920x1080), and also the MTS files are presented in preview window in correct resolution and the snapshots have almost always the correct size (1920x1080).
Especially the snapshots needs often a control check with the rigth mouse button/properties.
According the Corel description the X6 should support even the 4k videos, I am wondering how, when the standard HD causes such problems.

Re: VS X6 Format missmatch
X6 does support 4K and can indeed render to 4 K
What you cannot do is set the Project Properties to HD, we can only use Mpeg2 or Avi
For Avi we can increase the frame size to 1920 x 1080 , but that is avi not replicating your video files.
Your only option is to make sure the project properties are using a 16:9 ratio.
There will be no problems editing or rendering to HD or 4K
Snapshots in Clip mode or Project mode will create a different size image.

Re: VS X6 Format missmatch
I'm wondering whether X6 will allow you to create a HD or 4K template by using the ADD function in Movie Template Manager, and pointing to a clip with the Properties you want for a video you are editing...? I don't have X6 on a computer which I can use for testing.

Re: VS X6 Format missmatch
Thank you for everybody. He made already some intro clip (30 sec) and saved in H264 HD MP4. When he starts with this short clip it works also, ie the format will be 1920x1080 and the following MTS clips are also shown in correct size and formats. It seems just the MTS clips from the JVC camera are not detected correctly when placed to empty time line. When I worked with X6 my MTS clips were from a Sony camera and I cannot remember for such troubles. Maybe there is a problem. Anyway thank you.

Re: VS X6 Format missmatch
I seem to recall a similar problem around the time of X6, but I also seem to recall I renamed the problem clips with the .mpg extension i.e. changing the .mts to .mpg inside Windows. And that seemed to work.
