Version 2018 Interface

Post by MikeA »

I am totally bemused. For years I have run VideoStudio on two monitors, with the player/preview on the left monitor and the library panel above the timeline panel on the right. This using Windows 7. If I wanted to see the options I would click the options tag, the options would appear, and then, after I had used them, I could remove them just as easily. I bought the 2018 version yesterday and cannot figure out the interface. Yes, I have been able to recreate my layout, with the player on the left and the library above the timeline on the right, and now saved as layout 1. But when I click the options button the panel opens on the left screen, diminishing the size of my preview window considerably. Also the library window disappears and the timeline takes up the whole screen. I have no idea how to get back to my preferred layout without going into the settings tab - a pain. Double clipping just moves it to the right but the library is still somewhere out in space and I can't see how to find it. If I can't solve this, I'm going to ask for my money back.

I agree that there is something unpredictable going on. Try this to see if it works like you want. Save the Layout after the options panel is visible and the Preview window is in the second display. You can also double click on a clip on the timeline to get the options panel to display, but in any case wait to have the options panel displaying and the preview window where you want it before saving the layout.

Double clicking on the clip only seems to work if the display is in the default format. I did actually find a way to get a bearable display. That was to locate the options in the top right, next to a truncated library. This seemed to be fine. But after trying out some things, the program stopped working. I was getting this before. I am also having trouble seeing and getting any text onto a title. It just does not appear as I type, and then gives me a font error. Even using a stock title from the library shows nothing. This is a disaster. Anyone else having problems with this release? This has never happened to me before.

Lots of issues with taking the Preview window to another display; its behavior is erratic. For example, click on the Title track and the double click on the Preview window on another display, blinks and the Preview window moves back to its default position. I am concluding there are lots of bugs with multiple display support and the whole feature set of changing Layout.

I can't reproduce your problem of typing a Title text. That works as expected for me. Perhaps I am not doing the precise steps you are doing to get it to fail.

I just discovered that there was an update that didn't install with the main program. This has solved (apparently so far) the issue with titles as I can now get in and create or edit them, something I couldn't do before. I also have a setup that almost fits with my liking, though the options window remains open all the time, making the library window smaller. I guess having the options window open all the time cannot now be avoided. I also notice that if I click the 'Show library button' my preview window hops over from the left to the righthand monitor to its default position. Not what I want.

If you are seeing what my attached image shows, then click where the red arrow is pointing. That will return just your library window. The middle one highlighted in blue is library + options, and the third one to the right is options only. If you hover your mouse over any of those, it will tell you what they are. And with only the library window open, those three little buttons will be on the far bottom right of the library window.

Except it doesn't on my setup. It also moves the preview window back to the default position, sharing that area with the library and options windows.

And just now I tried to upload a movie to YouTube. The first time the program froze. The second time I got an improper argument warning followed by a freeze. And after I had manually closed down the program and restarted, my saved layout had gone. I don't have time to fool with this. They seem to have screwed up a nice program that I have used for years. Does it work better on Windows 10? In any event, I have asked for my money back and they are giving it to me. So disappointing.

The problems you encountered happen on my Windows 10 pc. If these problems are a big issue for you, then you did the right thing. I hope you tell Corel why you are getting a refund.

I installed the program on my other computer, one that has no history of VS installations. It installed fine and I was able to create and upload a YouTube video without problem. Yes, the preview screen would jump off my left hand monitor when I invoked the options. But a quick Ctrl+1 brought back my saved workspace arrangement. Today I was trying out another movie. This one had an overlay still image on it. Trying to get the options to come up for this little image proved horrendous. The program closed abruptly on me twice. The options display button would not work. At one time I lost the library panel and could not see any way to find it. So while my prior VS 8 or 9 versions may have interfered with 2018, they could not on this computer. I was hopeful all would be bearable - and I would repay - but now it looks like using VS 2018 will be too much of a hassle. Maybe an update will fix these things. Why were they not discovered before they made it public?

I only have VS 2018 in my pc and I have problems with multi-displays; I have three displays and no matter how I do layouts using either or all three displays, VS has problems. I agree that Corel could have tested this more, but I suspect they don't focus too much right now on multiple displays.
