I have had various issues in doing my first project which have now been resolved, and I have a DVD that works fantastic on PC's and TV screen.
However one problem still remains; my videostudio 8 will not show MPEG2 files (which is a problem previewing projects and putting chapters in the DVD burn stage).
I did manage to get my V8.00 to show an MPEG2 when I didn't know what I was doing! It had no sound but I had generated a seperate LCPM sound file. I then read this website loaded the four updates as suggested by the sticky on this forum including 8.01 and since then I just get a black screen when I try and play MPEG2 files in either VS or WMP (9.0) on XP sp2 (upgraded from win98).
The file size is there, and if you manually scroll through in VS the frames are there, and it makes a good DVD when burnt!
The WMP might well be a codec issue I loaded powerdvd v4.0 and still WMP will not play it but perhaps I need to upgrade the codec. However I don't know why the VS does not work?
Any help please?
MPEG2 codec fault in VS8.01 ?

MPEG2 problem?
scotty,
I am sorry I cannot give you direct help, as I have not had this problem.
The only time I get close, is when I do not have the correct codecs installed that the MPEG2 video was created in.
Can you tell us where you got the MPEG2 video file from? Did you create it yourself, or did you get it from someone else. Even if you created it yourself, did you create it in UVS?. I find that if I do not capture my MPEG2 Video in UVS, then UVS can have problems with the file.
What version of UVS are you using? I think you said Version 8.
If you give a bit more detail about the MPEG2 video (including video and audio formats), someone on the board may be able to assist more.

Thanks for the reply. I captured the files in DV format (AVI) in videostudio v8.01 Edited in the same program and created the MPEG2 in the same program, to the sticky instructions and under advisement from another user (Trevor Andrew) in this forum.
MPEG details were;
MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-PAL), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
MPEG Audio, 32000 Hz 12 bit, Stereo
This file plays on my computer at work under WMP v7.0 using a codec from powerdvd in windows 2000. However will not play on my computer I generated it on! XP sp2 (upgraded from 98 ) in Videostudio 8.01. (or wmp)
The screen goes black is thinks it is playing but the counter does not move.
As I said the resulting DVD I generated is fine on my TV or other players.

Hi Scotty
Can you check out your audio settings again, you appear to be still using 32 khz when you should use 48 for dvd.

MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-PAL), 4:3
Video data rate: 8000 kbps
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R) or mpeg audio
Ok
The white screen is a bit of a mystery. But without knowing the video clip properties it is hard to comment.
I would ensure you have a good file before you start looking at codec’s
But as it appear to have incompatible audio,(32 /48 Kb) you will have to render again to ensure you have a Dvd compliant file.
You may have to render the full project again, which is going to take time. Dv-Avi to Mpeg
You may be able to re-render the Mpeg2 file.(Mpeg To Mpeg) should be quicker.
Start a new project
Place the Mpeg file into the timeline,
Share –Create video File
Custom—Use the settings above.

MPEG2 not playing solved!
Assuming it was strange the problem effected both VS8 and WMP I looked at the video driver
and updated it (NVIDIA GeForce)
Hey presto! I can now play MPEG2 files. Now a happy bunny
Just posted this as info if anyone else has the same problem.
