Saving cropped photos to a new file in PSP2018

Post by Phil47 »

Ok, so I have taken 200 photos of my son playing football and have to crop just about every one and save it to a new file, deleting those not required.
But there we have a problem! When you crop the photo and click on the "Save as" icon it opens a window which has all the uncropped photos in it and
lurking in the top LH corner is the file for the newly cropped photos.
So you have to double click on that file to open it in order for the cropped photo to be saved.
Now I have to be honest and admit that it doesn't always do that and sometimes, when the "Save as" icon is clicked the new file does open but there seems to be no
set rule for this. It appears to be completely random and sometimes in the middle of a cropping session just changes from one file to the other.
Most annoying as it is at the moment. I have to double click on the required file to open it every time I crop a photo! This just doubles the time and effort required to crop
and save the 200 photos.
Is there any way this can be fixed please?

Try this:
1. Find your files and make a new folder on your desktop call it zzz something or !!!something . That way it is easy to find in any search either at the top or bottom of your explorer window.
2. Copy all the files you want to crop there.
3. Open PSP 2018 and then Restore the Explorer window folder and drag the first set of say 10 images into your workspace.
4. Crop your first image and then click the Save As button up top and select your compression value. Save the image and accept that you are overwriting the image there.
5. Close that image. Now with all other images crop and then click the Save button and the images should save and then you can close that image.
Even faster after that first Save As for each image do the crop and then click on the red X for the image and you will be prompted for the Save over image with the default being Yes. Just hit the Enter key and it is saved and closed at the same time. So it becomes select crop area, press Enter, click red X, hit Enter.

What you describe suggests that you expect subsequent images after step 5 to be saved, using Save, with the same compression as what you chose for Save As in step 4. In all my experimenting with Save I have come to the conclusion that compression is not changed using Save for the same image in the same session. But for a new image Save uses the default compression. So if you want a specific compression you have to use Save As.

To test this a long time ago I created many copies of a file so there would be no doubt about the final size comparisons. I then used Save As and Save in various sequences on those copies. When I saved image A using Save As with a low compression then Save with image B the file size was substantially smaller indicating higher compression. Using Save for image C gave the same size as for image B, the compression was the default.

Thanks guys but what I think should be a relatively straightforward process of cropping and filing into a new file is beginning to get overcomplicated.
I should point out here that the New File is a subfolder of the File containing the original photos and the subsequent File for the resized images is a subfolder of the Cropped file.
This ought not to be a complicated process.
Cropping and then filing in a new file.
The new file of cropped photos to be later resized in a batch process which has now been made so much easier by Corel PSP2018.
What I want to know is what determines which file the cropped image goes into when you click on the "Save as" icon? Why is it the new file for the cropped images sometimes or the existing original uncropped file sometimes?
And why does it change halfway through the processing sometimes after it has originally been going straight into the cropped image file?
Or is this not a Corel PSP2018 peculiarity but a Windows 10 thing?

Also, there are two ways to create the New File -
1. Create the New File before the processing starts
2. Create the New File at the time the first image in the batch is cropped and the "Save as" icon is clicked when the window opens and a New File has to be created

Also, I just did a test and created the New File for cropped images and when I went to Save as the first file I noticed the Save as window contains a drop down menu that does not show the New File for cropped images!
The window below shows the New File for cropped images which requires a double click to open it!
Why is the New File for cropped images not shown in the drop down menu? If it was in there it would solve the problem because this New File could be selected!
Tell the truth....but gently.

Use "Save Copy As" instead of "Save As" it should always default to the same folder you last saved to.

The reason for using the save as first and a compression is to clear for that session the revert to Save As when Save is used. It does not set the compression for future saves, but PSP X2 does.
I did as you did and loaded the same image under different numbered names. I did a Save As and used compressions 4, 5, 6 for three images . This gave :
compression 4 10903 KB
comp 5 9805 KB
comp 6 8725 KB

The original images as loaded were all 9853 KB
When I did a Save the size was 9798 KB so the default save compression is very close to 5.

In X2 the Save uses the last Save As compression.

Hartpaul:
The default compression for an image appears to vary. I've seen this in previous testing where in one instance the default appears to be 5 and in another 20. You may remember this discussion (viewtopic.php?f=56&t=63762&p=357555#p357555) where the curve shows the default to be about 15.

I remember that some time ago PSP Save used the last setting for compression in Save As but in this instance we were discussing PSP2018 and I felt users show know the consequences of what they do and not be surprised after the fact.

Thanks Levi - yes, "Save Copy As" works well.
I meant to say so earlier but just got wrapped up in doing another big (for me) file of photos so now that I am doing another one I had to go and refresh my memory here again.
