Remove Haze

I selected the about the top third then feathered it outside a bit till it hit the bottom. (because there appears to be more haze at the top.) In the selection i reduced the brightness and increased the contrast. Roughly (-20 and +27) I would have sharpened it if i'd had the original image too.

It's just a rough idea, but haze in general blurs, lightens and flattens. so you need to do the opposite of that. Maybe increase the saturation a tad too.

Just for fun (because of a conversation in another thread) I thought I'd try it with the Athentech Perfectly Clear Dehaze filter. Then I applied a script called Rusty's New Dynamic Range Script. The script was to try to lighten some of the deeper shadow near the bottom of the image - i.e., to even out the dynamic range somewhat. It would have been nice to have a much larger image to work with - not a lot of pixels here.

I compared the dehaze filter in Perfectly clear (thank you for the find) and the dehaze filter in Affinity. Here is the latter:

Yep, and I think that's the point. "Haze" covers a lot of situations (fog, glare, dirty camera lens) and affects different scenes in different ways from a digital perspective. So I don't think there can be a "one size fits all" solution. As @flagpole pointed out in his post, there are several aspects that are affected by "haze", so different subjects might require different adjustments - subsequent to the original "dehaze" algorithm - to color, contrast, light diffusion, etc. - to obtain the best result for a specific digital image subject.

So far - for me - Perfectly Clear's single Dehaze filter with Strength slider provides the best simple solution for many subjects. And its other options within the same plugin provide at least more ways to tweak the result. But even then, some images can still benefit from further tweaks in PSP with tools like Clarity and/or Levels and/or Sharpening.

And, of course, the decision as to satisfaction with the final result is in the eye of the beholder, being the PSP user doing the optimization.
