Nick,
I hope you don't mind, but I am sharing the same message I PM'd you this morning so that anyone else with the same sort of problem might understand the difficulty.

BobThe wording of the error message indicates that there is a problem with the *.avi file that Movie Factory cannot resolve.
This can happen when the *.avi file has "unusual" properties. These properties may include an incorrect frame rate, say 10 frame/second where PAL requires ~25 frame, NTSC requires ~30 frames; resolution out of range (normal full screen is 640x480 pixels, half size is 320x240, quarter size is 160x120). Other errors could include assorted colour and compression factors.
For a general discussion about *.avi files, please review this article:

About your specific problem, AVI is a Microsoft creation which means that your file can be read by Microsoft software such as Windows Media Player and Movie Maker. That you can convert your file to *.wmv is a plus, because *wmv files, unlike *.avi files, have very specific requirements which Movie Factory can handle. It does mean that incorporating these files into your Movie Factory-created DVD requires an extra time-consuming step, but at least it can be done.

It could simply be that there isn't enough drive space for the temporary folder. I got that same error message when I had run out of room. Since you're working with AVI files - which are usually very large - the available drive space would be the very first thing I would check.
I think DMF starts out with the C: drive as the default for its working directory. If you're working with big video files, you probably have other, larger choices available.
The program is also bad about leaving huge files behind. Take a look at the folder named DMF_Temp in the working directory. After several projects, the "convert" folder usually ends up with many gigs of temp files. It's important to clear them out from time to time, either using the icon within DMF (on the final screen where you get your disc burning options) or manually.
