Windows Backgrounds Turn Yellow

Post by ehume »

When I open PSP 2018, my Windows Backgrounds Turn Yellow.

I have been using Windows 7-64 for years. I have been using PSP 2018 since soon after it came out.
This is new behavior.
The Windows backgrounds do not turn yellow until I open PSP 2018.
My workaround: Desktop > Right-click > Personalize (at bottom of context menu) > Display > Calibrate Color > Next > Windows turn white-gray.
Does this every time. Fix works every time.

Am I the only one experiencing this?
Am I doing something wrong?
Has my installation of PSP 2018 gone flaky? Do I need to reinstall it?
Is there a Repair Install I can try?
Had PS3, PSP3; Installed: PSP-4.12, 5.03, 6.02, 7.04 (liked it a lot & used it for years), 8.00, XI, x4.3.0.3, x6.2.0.20, x7.4.0.11, x8.3.0.13, x9.2.0.7; now using PSPx10 (PSP 2018; version 20.2.0.1 x64) on Win 10-64 b2004.

I suspect that this may be due to PSP's color management. Many users in this forum recommend that Color management be turned off. Go to file/color management/color management and there you have the option to turn it off. I have "enable color management" on and basic color management enabled. In monitor profile I use the profile generated by my calibration device and this works for me. I think you could run into trouble using Proofing and different profiles.

If you do a search for color management you would find very lengthy discussions on the subject and could get more insight than I can give. Many people report unwanted shifts in the display in PSP and hence turn off the color management.

If you're interested profiles are stored at C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\color in Win 10.

You are not alone. I have the same issue and have logged it as a bug about 9 months ago. I do have color management turned off. This started with PSP2018; previous versions do not have this issue.

Hi, ehume

May I know more about this issue?
I noticed that you said: "This is new behavior."
It means this issue occurred recently, right?
So what changed on your system recently?
Did you install any similar photo edit software recently? (Ex: Adobe photoshop? )
Or you could recall anything that recently changed your system?
Thanks.

Is this happening only on Windows 7 systems?

Good questions. Nothing was added except Windows Update and DxO 11.
My OS is Win 7-64.

Uninstalling DxO 11 changed nothing.
Unchecking Enable Color Management changed nothing.

So doesn't that suggest that the Windows 10 update might be the culprit? It has certainly created various different issues with different users with various different software programs on different computer systems and with various different issues reported. When Microsoft forces updates on its operating system users without giving them a choice then, IMHO, you get what you paid for. :-(

The update was for Windows 7. Even so, all it's getting now is extended support. Mainstream support ended in 2015. I doubt that MS tested PSP 2018 for compatibility on Windows 7.

Cropped screenshot of part of your windows backgrounds before and after you open PSP2018 please.
I gather you are referring to the Windows 7 desktop changing color. You could of course change your background to a sunset and the change to yellow might enhance it. :D

My bad - I missed that. But in that case the OP could also likely roll back that update and see if it fixes the problem. I think you could do that using Uninstall for updates of older Windows versions, but stand to be corrected.

The problem is that I only use PSP in spurts, sometimes with long gaps between usages, so I don't know how far back to roll this thing.

I just got cut screenshots, but I don't know how to post them.

The plot thickens. When I learned about attachments I went back to my "before" and "after" images. Both were white! So although stuff looks yellow on the screen, the computer is not registering it as any color.

Hi, ehume
Can you capture the screenshot of color management setting in the PSP for us?
Location should be under "File\ Color Management\ Color Management".
Would like to see if the setting make any difference about this issue.

Thanks.

I noticed that too and the only way to capture the yellow painting of the screen was to use my cell phone to record it.

BTW, your fix worked for me too. Thank you for that. :D
