how do I fade in an overlay
I have an image on my first frame and my objective it to have a very slow fade into that image, like a light slowly filling a room.
The only way I have been able to do it is by covering the image with a black panel overlay and then using a customized motion on the panel. By fiddling around I managed to get close to the effect so it fades in nicely but then it fades out which I don't want.
Surely there is an easy way of doing what I would have thought would be a simple task, to have a slow fade into a clip ?

Re: how do I fade in an overlay
You can add the crossfade from FX library to the beginning of your clip, adjust the length of the Xfade
or
The Customise Motion tool is a good choice
Right click your clip for Customise Motion
Set size to 100%
Right click the first red keyframe for Copy and Paste to All
Add a key frame at approx. 3 seconds
Highlight / select first keyframe -- Set Opacity to zero
Play effect

Re: how do I fade in an overlay
Excellent thanks. The fade to black has a limit of 3 seconds but animation motion works perfect and I get far more control

Hi
We can change the transition durations by selecting the transition and dragging the yellow handles to the left or right.
or
Double click the transition will open the Options Panel – from the transition tab adjust the digital clock to change the duration
If you wish to change the default duration go to F6 Preferences Edit tab – transition effect.

Why not just add whichever transition that you want as shown below?delboy007 wrote:how do I fade in an overlay

Re: how do I fade in an overlay
I seem to get in a mess with the transition. This is what I did (version x10)
Add black panel of 3 seconds
add image
put transition in between the panel
the length of the transition is limited by the length of the black panel so it won't go above 3 seconds. If I lengthen the panel then it is much too long and the fade is still to quick. I don't seem to have much control on the fade.

Re: how do I fade in an overlay
The lead in resource (your beginning black image) must be at least as long as the desired transition duration as must be the following resource (your second image). When the three element durations are set (lead in black, following image, transition joining the two) the total segment timing will adjust properly.delboy007 wrote:I seem to get in a mess with the transition. The Fade to Black transition isn't what you want to use - use the Crossfade transition.
For your case try this practice:
> Desired result is a 15 second long segment that fades in from black over the first 10 seconds, then remains at full intensity for five seconds by using the Crossfade transition effect.
1. Insert lead in black image then increase the image duration to 10 seconds.
2. Insert the desired following image then increase the image duration to 15 seconds.
3. Insert the Crossfade transition effect between the two resources and increase the transition duration to 10 seconds.
4. Click on Project mode (to get out of Clip mode), return to the beginning, then click the Play button icon.
Done.

Re: how do I fade in an overlay
Excellent thanks. I've got it now although it seems a bit fiddly to get the exact timings I need.
I do think it should be made simpler by Corel. In audio editing we simply select the length of the fade click ok and job done.

It isn't difficult, just a bit of addition/subtraction and mapping. You can get it down to the single frame with little "work."delboy007 wrote:Excellent thanks. I've got it now although it seems a bit fiddly to get the exact timings I need.

Your statement is only valid when the mating segments are at least as long as the desired fade. You can't do a 15 second fade on a 10 second clip. (I started audio editing in the late '60s and tutored undergrads in the fine art of splicing tape and panning with mixer sliders.)delboy007 wrote: In audio editing we simply select the length of the fade click ok and job done.

Re: how do I fade in an overlay
If it was the same as an audio edit then there would be no need for two segments. One video clip, just highlight the area of a video that you want to fade in/out and job done. No need to calculate or map or search for support.

Ah, yes - Trevor gave the solution in the second post: use Customise Motion.delboy007 wrote:If it was the same as an audio edit then there would be no need for two segments. That does seem easier to control.

A few more options
Attached is a smart package that should open using CVSX10

Re: how do I fade in an overlay
wow that's fantastic thanks. Definitely much easier and more control with the motion settings. I have been having trouble getting a balance between the length of the fade and the length of the clip but using that little blue bar I can get it exactly as I want it. Thanks everyone
